Channahon is one of the oldest communities in the quad cities area and was first settled by Germans in 1847. The community became a center for agricultural production after settlers discovered rich farmland near Channahon. The community experienced rapid growth during World War II when Channahon became an important military base due to its location on the Western border of Illinois. However, economic decline followed the war and Channahon lost its significance as a shopping destination. The Channahon post office opened in 1881 and closed in 1985. It was located one mile south of the current post office on State Street. The village was named for Channahon Creek and for Caleb Chapman, an early settler who platted what is now Channahon Township in 1837. In 1866, two brothers, John W. and Nels H. Christensen purchased of land at the junction of present day US-63/I-55 and state routes M9 and M18 near modern day Channahon Elementary School to establish their own town site. They named their new community "Channahon" after their father's home country of Denmark (now Chatham County). The first store opened in what is now the old post office building on May 5, 1866; it was owned by John W Christensen and operated under his name until 1870 when it became a part of the newly organized Village of Channahon Incorporated under Act No 687 of November 4th, 1871 which authorized all village residents to vote on issues includingelecting officers & select firemen". The first school opened in what is now Old High School on October 15th 1886 with three teachers from Mount Carmel Female Academy serving as instructors; these women taught grammar classes as well as arithmetic and spelling before moving onto other subjects such as literature appreciation or history during lunchtime outside instead of inside where children were required to attend school from 7:00am until 3:00pm according to law then existing however this remained unenforced until 1896 when local resident Anna Morrison made a petition asking the state government for approval to open morning sessions starting at 7:00am instead allowing children up through 3rd grade free access toschool while mother served dinner during that time period thereby breaking this law... On March 9th 1897 Mrs Morrison again made a petition asking for morning sessions starting at 7:00am rather than continuing into afternoon which would have allowed more opportunities for mothers to workoutsideduring lunchtime also children could not be educated during those hours except if they had special permission from their parents... By 1907, there were six stores and two churches serving the community. The population peaked at 753 in 1920 before declining slightly until 1940 when it reached 539 residents. From then until 2000, the population decreased steadily each year until reaching its current level of 2,711 people as of 2010 census
