Channahon is a small, unincorporated community in Johnson County, Illinois, United States. The community is located on the eastern bank of the Channahon River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,476. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Channahon was platted in 1853 by John and Mary (Foley) Channahon. It post office operated from 1854 to 1865. A store and post office were built there in 1857 by Jno. Wigglesworth and are still standing today as two-story frame buildings with attached garage and outhouses. The first settler in Channahon was James Sutherlin who arrived in 1851 from Ireland. He built a cabin on the east side of the river where he lived until his death in 1852. His son John Sutherlin also settled here around this time and became an important factor in early village life with his grocery store, blacksmith shop and other holdings near what is now Channahon High School. In 1860 James Cournoyer bought land at what is now corner First Street & Third Avenue from James Sutherlin for $100 dollars cash which he used to build a grist mill that would serviced local farmers until it went out of business around 1870 when chlordane production increased elsewhere in Johnson County so much so that chlordane became an available export product for nearby towns such as Decatur and Jacksonville In 1861 Anna (Bourke) Cournoyer married George Treadwell who had come overland from Kentucky some time earlier but died before reaching Channahon; she then married James Cournoyer Anna Cournoyer continued to live here after her husband's death until her own death about 1893 In 1865 new post office construction began with David Fenton serving as agent A wagon road connecting Jacksonville with Decatur opened up through this part of Johnson County soon thereafter making it easy for farmers to get their goods to market David Fenton served as Postmaster here until his retirement about 1907 however mail service currently continues only via package delivery In 1908 David Fenton's widow Anna moved into her old home at 501 East Second Street following his retirement into another long career as an attorney general candidate against Bruce Rauner

The name Channahon comes from a Native American word meaning "place where there are many trees." Channahon's first post office opened in 1873. In 1915, an electric streetlight system (the first municipally owned) was installed in Channahon, making it one of the last towns in Kane County to be lit by electricity. In 1935, Channahon became home to its only store when the old village grocery closed its doors. In 1949, another store opening followed when the new village hall became available for use. Some early businesses that operated in Channahon include: a feed mill and sawmill; a blacksmith shop; a bakery; and two churches serving both Protestant and Catholic populations (John Fenton Presbyterian Church and Stations Bible Chapel). The most recent business presence has been a convenience store which opened in 2006 adjacent to the elementary school which serves as the town center for all local activities including shopping, dining out, meeting places for civic groups and more. Channahon is also home to two parks-one developed with money donated by citizens through grantsmanship contests organized by Kiwanis Club International - Park O'Hare/Fenton Park on Main Street and Park Ridge on Delaware Avenue - as well as smaller parks scattered throughout the community such as Oneida Grove Recreation Area on Delaware Avenue south of I-635 between Loop 362 and Wacker Drive Northwest corner - these provide opportunities for physical activity within walking distance of homes or public transportation access nearby
Channahon was founded in 1871 by General James H. Channahon and his wife, Sarah. The town grew rapidly after it was platted on the east side of the Chicago River. In 1916, Channahon became a city and is now located in the far north Side of Chicago.
