In 1806, following the Louisiana Purchase from France, Illinois became part of the United States and Channahon's residents voted to join the new state as part of what was known as The Great Migration. Many early settlers came from England and other parts of Europe via boat or wagons overland through Iowa and Michigan Territory before moving into what is now McLean County in 1810. By 1830 about 60% of Channahon's residents were Irish American; many more peopleigrated during the nineteenth century from all over America including Germany (the largest influx), Italy (large numbers after unification), Russia (especially among Eastern Russian émigrés who had fled tsarism), Sweden ( unusually large numbers among farmers fleeing an oppressive aristocracy ), Canada (particularly among loggers) and Australia ( particularly among pastoralists). During World War II much activity took place at nearby Rockford Arsenal where nearly 2 million tons of munitions were produced including almost one third of all US explosives production. In 1945 most everyone moved away when war ended but a few thousand troops continued living in scattered housing near Arsenal until it closed down in 1973 due to budget cuts caused by inflationary pressures which have continue even today. The post office closed here on November 5th 1951 with only 50 postage stamps left unmailed since it opened on December 12th 1850'. One reason for this may be that mail service did not start until April 1865 which coincided with Chicagoland's incorporation as a city!

Channahon experienced its biggest growth during World War II when many manufacturing jobs moved to nearby Chicago due to wartime demand for munitions and other products. However, since Channahon's economy has largely been based on agriculture since then, most of the jobs that went away have not returned. In recent years there have been several changes going on in Channahon: 1) A new high school was built in 2006-2007; 2) A new fire department was established in 2009; 3) A new elementary school (grades K-5) opened fall 2010; and 4) A brand new library opened fall 2011
