In 1925, Mrs. Lavinia Kapp opened her own optometry business in Channahon called The Kapp Optometry Company. From then on, Mrs. Kapp became known as one of the most successful optometrists in Channahon. Additionally, during this time period, Mr. Harry Dombrowski also started a second business called The Camera Store which sold photography equipment and supplies to local photographers and artists alike. Throughout these years, both businesses continued to thrive and grow along with their customer base. By 1961, The Optical Shop had reached its former size and had become an integral part of the community fabric for all residents who shopped there for their optical needs! Channahon was platted on July 7, 1868 by Samuel P. Huntington and named after his brother-in-law Channahon Township in Canada. The community became a village in 1904 and was incorporated as a town on October 15, 1924. When Kankakee County was granted charter by the state of Illinois on November 10, 1927, it included all of Kane County except for Channahon Village which remained within Kankakee County until its annexation into Kane County on January 1, 1961. Channahon is located at (41.760976,-87.439562). According to the 2010 census, the median household income for Channahon is $50,479. The racial makeup of Channahon according to the 2000 U.S Census was 89% White and 11% Black or African American; Hispanic or Latino made up 3%. As of 2008 there were no reported homes with title deeds remaining from when Chicagoland Communities took over affairs from HUD back in 2001. As with most areas annexed into Kane County since January 1st 1961 there has been some loss in population due to commuting options available outside of town (and also because many people have left for better opportunities outside of Kane County). However while this may be true anecdotally few residents have actually moved away completely (<5%). Overall it seems that although growth rates are slowing down overall homeownershiprates remain high (>85%).

Channahon, Illinois is a small town located in the Sangamon County seat of Joliet. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Channahon is one of the few towns in Sangamon County that does not have a university presence. The only other post-secondary school in Channahon is Community College of Decatur. The first settler to arrive in Channahon was John Stephenson, who arrived on April 12, 1837. Stephenson's family moved into what is now the eastern edge of Channahon from nearby Carbondale and built a log cabin on the site that would become their home for the next fifty-six years. At this time, it was one of just two settlements in Sangamon County with a permanent population and no land ownership or business operation available to them. In 1857, John Stephenson's son Daniel welcomed his second wife Harriet into the community and they soon had three children: James (1858-1922), Nellie (1860-1942) and Maynard (1862-1945). Although Daniel died young from typhoid fever contracted while traveling westward on an exploratory trip to new lands near Mexico City during the Mexican American War, he will always be remembered as one of Channahon's earliest settlers because he contributed significantly to its growth by donating land for schools and churches within the community. In 1872, when Illinois became a state, Channahon residents voted to move from their original location within Sangamon County eastward into Cook County as part of what would eventually become known as "the Great Migration". By 1870, over 60% of all adults living in Cook County were channelling their energy towards moving away from rural poverty and instability back towards opportunities enjoyed growing up outside Sangamon County - an indication that economic stability had finally arrived in central Illinois following more than 150 years of turmoil caused by political factors such as gold discoveries andborder wars. In 1895, after long deliberations among local leaders including Mayor Frank Nelson chaired by then Congressman George Wirtzenthaler Sr., voters passed a $1 million bond issue referendum providing funding for various infrastructure projects including new roads and bridges; schools; hospitals; justices' courts; libraries; recreation areas; agricultural improvements; water systems; electric lighting & telephone service throughout townspeople turned out en masse for what has come to be known as "Nelson Day" commemorating this significant event marking Chicago's annexation into America due southlasting more than 100 years! By the early 20th century, the town had become an important center for agriculture and commerce. It lost its importance in the Depression years but regained some of its former stature during World War II as a munitions plant.
