Channahon is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was established in 1885 by the merger of two settlements, Channahon and New Hope. The town has a population of 821 as of the 2010 census. The first settler to arrive in Channahon was John Hildebrandt, who built his cabin on the banks of Big Muddy River in 1885. He and his family were among the earliest settlers in what would become Channahon. The name "Channahon" was derived from an Indian word meaning "place where there is no water." The first post office was established in Channahon on February 6, 1886. The name change came about because at that time only rural mail deliveries were made by wagon or horseback. In 1890, Channahon residents voted to add a stop on the Chicago and Northwestern Railway line at their village center for passengers travelling between Chicago and Rockford. Passenger service ended twelve years later when the railroad merged with the Union Pacific Railroad. A new store and mill were built near the tracks in 1912 by C F Gorman & Sons; this mill remain operational today as Village Mill No 1 (formerly known as Village Mill No 2). A new schoolhouse also served as a local elementary school from 1922 until 1974 when it closed due to budgetary concerns following World War II; however, plans have been floated to reopen it as a museum honoring local history and culture. In 1996-97 for $1 million dollars channelled through four-time winner Eli Lilly & Company's campaign to support economic development within Cook County - including Channahon - Channahon High School constructed Dreamland Arena which seats 3,500 people professional sports teams such as basketball (the Blackhawks), ice hockey (the Blackhawks), football (the Bears), wresting/athletic events (UFC Fighting Championships) during concerts throughout its 7 year life span! It should be noted that this arena was not funded through private enterprise but rather community donations culminating into one large donation from Mr. Lilly himself! There are currently 4 high schools located within driving distance of each other serving grades 9-12: Iroquois Valley Middle School(Ivy League college prep/football team), Park Ridge Intermediate School(JROTC Teamsters Local 264 member), Midway High School(JVarsity girls lacrosse champions) Highland Park South High School which serves students starting 7th grade according to state law[K-8] making it possible for children living close enough to attend any one school without having multiple transportation options available! Additionally there are numerous businesses located just outside of town limits providing goods and services needed by those residing within: bakeries, candy stores etc... This level of commerce allows for easy access to goods and services needed by everyone regardless of location while simultaneously creatinga strong social fabric unique unto itself!!!
