In 1875, Channahon became one of thirty towns in Alexander county when it was organized from Grundy County. The town's first post office opened in 1878 under the name "Natchez". It changed its name to "Channahon" in 1893 after Averill Chatham, an early settler and stockholder who donated land for the town site. The village of Channahon quickly emerged as an important commercial center due to its easy access to transportation and markets outside of Springfield or Chicago. In 1964, Channahon voted to become a city with its own government; this decision was later overturned by the Illinois Supreme Court because several other towns withinAlexander county had alreadyBecome Cityies at that time. During World War II, many factories were located in and around Channahon due to its close proximity to major military bases such as Camp Dodge and Rock Island Arsenal; however, few residents were drafted into service owing to high rates of unemployment during peacetime. After the war ended, many businesses closed down and most residents left for better opportunities elsewhere within Alexander county or outside of Illinois altogether. A new shopping mall called "Century 21" opened near Channahon Municipal Airport in 2005 which attracted widespread negative attention from locals due to his high cost tags (as much as $100 per square foot), poor design/layout (with no parking available), lack of ventilation and extensive use of asbestos materials throughout; however this mall has since been renovated and renamed after another developer who contributed millions towards bringing it up To Standards compliance).
