In 1972-1973 Channahon voters approved $7 million worth of improvements to its roads which included resurfacing them with asphalt; this project cost $10 per household ($ when purchased through township funding). In 1982-1983 Channahon voters approved a mill project which would have added an additional 50 full-time jobs to thetown's economy (). However, due to local opposition the project did not proceed (); instead it became known as "The Mill Run controversy". In 1992-1993 Channahon voters approved establishment of a township board which would have provided more control over local affairs (). This move by the township board helped spur development around Town Lake while providing more money for infrastructure projects such as water mains (), streetlights (), sidewalks () and parks (). With current housing prices set to increase (+25% annually), it is likely that future plans for Town Lake will include increased visitation or even commercial usage if necessary().

The first Europeans to visit Channahon were French colonists in 1763 who named it "Channahon". The name may be from a Shawnee word meaning "place of white cottonwoods." In 1837, the people of Channahon organized themselves into a company to build a sawmill on their land. They named their mill after General Andrew Jackson and his brigades who had invaded Missouri during the Mexican-American War. The mill was built in 1838 and became known as the Jackson Mill. It continued to operate until 1917 when it was sold to the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1907, Channahon voters approved annexation by Springfield Township which added 1,000 residents to that town's population. On March 25, 1915, Channahon lost its post office when SIUE moved to Springfield and took over Post Office No. 3 there; however, Main Street still retains that name today (though no longer in use) because both offices were located on one side of high school ground which is now State Route 159 across from PNC Park (formerly known as White Sox Park). On April 15th 1920 Main Street intersected with Chicago Avenue near where I-55 presently meets I-44 northbound and southbound; this intersection would later become known as Republic Boulevard/Main Street interchange for all traffic coming eastbound or northbound off I- 44 past Republic Boulevard onto Main Street - making it one of only two major intersections between Chicago Avenue/I- 55 and State Route 159 remaining unchanged since 1920 when SR 159 split from US 61 just east of Loop 375E/Wabash Road (now Elmwood Drive) near what is now Griggs Road/Lake Shore Drive). On October 6th 1925 soon after SIUE replaced Illinois Central Railroad as Springfield's local transit provider with electric trolley service along routes 100A & 101B; this new timeline marks end of streetcar era in city limits – though streetcars still ran out west on Race Street between Fourth Ward & West Side High School until November 30th 1930 just prior to cessation of electric service due to lack of funding following World War II.
