Channahon, Illinois was first settled in 1847. The town was named for Channahon Township, Michigan Territory. In 1892, the city of Chicago annexed Channahon and the town became part of Chicago.
Channahon, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 1,789 at the 2010 census. Channahon is located on the south side of Chicago. The first people to live in Channahon were the Potawatomi who were here from about 1795 until 1814. The second group who lived here were the Quakers from Abington Township in Pennsylvania and they came around 1830. They built a gristmill and store near where Main Street now stands. The third group that lived in Channahon were the Germans from Königsberg, Germany and they came around 1851-1853. They built a sawmill and some other things here before moving on to other places. In 1892, Channahon had its own post office which was called Hinsdale after one of the founders of it, John Hinsdale Sr.. In 1932, it merged with nearby South Side village of Weequahic to form what is now Channahon Village Of Weequahic Incorporation Incorporated). In 1955 it again merged with neighboring North Side village of Aramis to form what is now Aramis Village Of Channahon Incorporation Incorporated).

They named the community after General Channahon, a Frenchman who fought against the United States during the War of 1812. The population of Channahon grew rapidly due to its location and access to land and water resources. By 1840, it had a population of over 400 people. In 1847, Channahon became one of the first towns in Illinois to be granted incorporation as a village. By 1870, Channahon had a population of 1,500 people and was making significant contributions to the growth of northern Illinois. In that year, it was chosen as site for what would become Springfield Township. In 1898, Channahon became an incorporated city and remains so today.
