Channahon is a small town in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Channahon is located on the east side of the Fox River and on Illinois Route 6. The first settler in Channahon was David Hockaday and his wife Rachel in 1812. A log cabin was built by Hockaday in 1814 and he named it "Hickory Grove". In 1835, John Fenton bought land here from David Hockaday and began to build a large frame house which he named "Fenton's Cabin". In 1838, Henry Ford came to Channahon with his family and started a farm near present-day Hickory Grove. Ford used parts of what is now Channahon as part of his Model T factory. When World War I began, America needed workers for the war effort so Fenton offered to sell land to the government for them to use as an airfield. The government accepted this offer and built an airfield here known as CampChannahon (later renamed Wright Field). After World War I ended, the airfield was sold back to Fenton and the town started growing around it. The first post office opened in Channahon on February 14, 1919. In 1951, when Illinois became a state, Channahon became one of its five townships along with Addison Township (now Elgin), Arlington Heights Township (now Schaumburg), Deer Park Township (now Cook County), and Grayslake Township (now DuPage). On November 3rd of that year, voters approved a measure heating up watermelons for local farmers through private sponsorship instead of buying them from Monsanto—the first time such program had been established in Chicagoland area since before Prohibition ended thirty years earlier! With no public works department or other resources available to help manage growth or promote development within its boundaries after statehood arrived like most other townships within Chicagoland Area under new governance structure - village form - many businesses closed down during early 1960s due various reasons including lack of customers/workers willing/able relocate & lack Of Funds from central government; high taxes also played major role during that decade On January 1st 1967 – just two weeks after being organized into village form by then Mayor Edward Jelinek – City Council placed restrictions on alcoholic sales within Village limits effective until further notice following numerous complaints about open taverns serving unlimited amounts of alcohol well into midnight hrs; Special lighting ordinances were put into effect limiting hours drunken people could be seen & police activity increased when intoxicated individuals were observed walking or driving while impaired
Channahon is a city in Peoria County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,824. The Channahon community was organized on February 5, 1871 by J.D. Hicks and others as a new town in response to the opening of the Chicago Railroad in that year. It became an incorporated village on October 1, 1907. The present-day Channahon City limits were laid out by surveyors George Hoadley and Alfred Myron Potter in 1879 and include most of what is now Channahon Township and much of what is now Union Township.
