Channahon, Illinois is a small town located in Elkhart County, Illinois. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Channahon is part of the East Central Illinois Statistical Area. The first settler in Channahon was Nicholas Ioffe who arrived in 1839. He and his wife, Mary Jane (née Stroud), founded a farm on what is nowowned by the town. In 1841, John Gorman and family moved to Channahon from Superior Township and began to farm around the corner from Nicholas’s home on Third Street. By 1851, there were 10 families living in Channahon with 100 acres of land. In 1881, George Witherspoon purchased land east of Channahon from Nicholas Ioffe for $1 million dollars which he used to build Witherspoon Hall which still stands today on Main Street within the limits of Channahon. In 1893-1894 American Electric Railway built a line through Channahon and connected it with Chicago via Elkhart Lake. This railway significantly increased trade and commerce in the area and helped bring new life to Channahon during these difficult times. In 1916-1917 World War I veteran James Hutton settled in nearby Normal Heights after his discharge from military service in France where he had been serving as an intelligence officer with British forces captained by General Douglas MacArthur. After returning home Hutton decided that he would like to live close enough to be able to visit his friends and family frequently but also far enough away so that they wouldn’t have anything to do when he wasn’t visiting them himself! WhenNormal Heights became available for civilian use following World War II Hutton donated it for use as a Army barracks until it was turned into non-residential housing by the City of Chicago in 1960 after being sold by Hutton for $2 million dollars! Today there are more than 300 businesses operating within walking distance of each other within downtown areas such as North Park Mall & Old Navy Shopping Center while also having access to over 50 miles of bike trails including two loop trails that connect downtown with rural areas surrounding town making it one of the most bike friendly communities anywhere! There are also several parks available including Jerome Park which offers excellent views over central Elkhart County; High School Fields which offer playfields & gardens; Maple Leaf Public Library situated just off Highway 20 next door; White Sands Golf Course - one mile west of town on State Road 17; Ferguson Municipal Sales Tax Zone - 2 blocks east or South side of main street off ramp onto Interstate 894

Channahon is a small town located in the southeast corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. It lies on the banks of the Vermilion River and is known for its agricultural products and local history. The Channahon post office was established in 1868, and most of the current town was built between 1907 and 1912. The first settler in Channahon was John Handy, who arrived in 1825 from England. His brother-in-law, James Hays, also settled in Channahon about 1830. By 1837 there were twelve families living in Channahon. The first school building was erected on the present site of the community in 1868 by J.H. Bowen and Wm Covington. In 1907–12, construction began on what would become Channahon’soriginaltown square which still stands today.. The new Town Hall was completed in 1912 and has been used as a private residence ever since . Other buildings that were constructed during this time include: a Methodist church (1892), an old cotton gin (1910),the first public library (1911),an ice cream parlor (1920), a blacksmith shop(1921),anda garage(1974). Today, much of this original infrastructure still remains including: paved streets, large central garden area with several houses surrounding it.,and two schools – one elementary (gradeschool through fifth grade) and one high school (6th to 12th grades).
Channahon was founded in 1832 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. The town prospered until the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed much of the town, killed many people, and destroyed some churches.
