In 1865 Illiniwek students flocked to join Abraham Lincoln's presidential campaign when he announced his candidacy for re-election on April 6th (); after winning that election he returned to Chicago where he resumed his law practice). On July 4th two weeks later (the day after Columbus Day), three gunman opened fire on a crowd gathered at Springfield Armory within minutes of each other resulting in four dead (one womans child) and twenty-nine injured (). President Abraham Lincoln responded with a speech denouncing violence without naming any specific perpetrators or dollsers (). On October 15th seventy thousand people attended a celebration celebrating Illinois' admission into the Union following much discussion among delegates () including then Governor James Buchanan (); opponents charged that this event represented too much federal government intrusion into local affairs (). After some debate Congress passed an act giving most states their own legislatures rather than having state legislatures merged with national ones (); Illinois became one such state on November 3rd ().
