The first pepper spray use in Champaign was on October 7th of 1892 when police officers were called to the scene of a fight between two men. One officer deployed pepper spray and the other man fled. The first known use of pepper spray as an self-defense tool was in 1903 when police responded to a disturbance at the Pigeon Drive Hotel. There, one officer discharged hisspray into the air and ordered several guests to disperse. This early use of pepper spray led to its current usage as a weapon by law enforcement officers across Illinois.

In 1876, Dr. John Dye patented a pepper spray design that became available to the public under the trade name "Sevin." These early models were powered by compressed air and had a range of up to 100 yards. However, these early prototypes were unsuccessful and were replaced by more successful pepper sprays later on in this century. In 1984, The United States Patent Office granted US Patent 607638 to David Wohlgemuth for his invention of pepper spray technology which he named "Adrenaline." This patent allowed anyone who possessed it to produce and purchase pepperspray without having to go through a licensing process. After this breakthrough, pepper Spray began becoming prevalent throughout law enforcement and security applications across the globe. The main reasons why pepper Spray is so beneficial are its high lethality rate (50% vs 15% for firearms) as well as its ability to incapacitate assailants quickly - making them unable to operate machinery or fight back effectively against attackers if they do manage to get close enough. Additionally, due to its wide-spread availability and ease of use both currently and in the future, it will likely play an even larger role in global policing come 2020 as various countries adopt it into their arsenal as part of their overall counterterrorism strategy

Champaign, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Champaign County. As of 2010, the population was 18,996. The city is located on the Sangamon River and is bordered by Urbana to the north, Bloomington to the east, Normal to the south and west, and Peoria to the northwest. In 1816, General John Brown's forces destroyed Springfield while pursued by General Anthony Wayne's army through Illinois. Champaign was one of three settlements caught in between; Springfield lay on a strategic location between two major military routes. The other two were Vandalia and Rockford which both fell after years of war with each other. The first recorded mention of Champaign can be found in an article dated November 8th, 1795 when George Washington sent Captain James Cook ashore at Kaskaskia Point on his way back from exploring Lake Michigan. A map drawn up by Captain Cook show that he charted a course for what would become Champaign Township on November 10th along what is now State Road 1A (now Interstate 480). It should be noted that this was before present-day Champaign had been established as a town or village! One early resident of Champaign was Judge Samuel Latham who served from 1796-1800 inclusive when he also became United States Attorney for Kane County AdditionallyJudge Daniel Dyer served from 1800-1801 inclusive when he represented Illinois in Congress as a Democrat representing IL’s 3rd congressional district under Clay Shaw during much disputed time period including Jacksonian America during presidency era! On February 2nd 1800 Jacob Hardin arrived at Kaskaskia Point bringing news that France had purchased land east of Chicago panhandle moving their entire garrison across Iowa Rivers into western Wisconsin Territory then onto northern Minnesota Territory eventually joining Canada near Hudson Bay then Lac des Assurances just beyondpresent day Winnipeg Manitoba Canada! This event marks arrival of Europeans permanently within present day United States!!! In 1819 Doctor David Wistar arrived in Quincy aboard USS Pomponio with over 200 students following his studies at West Point where he graduated 3rd class in 1807! He soon began practicing medicine hereabouts providing care for settlers newly arrives upon these shores!! We are fortunate enough to have Dr Wistar’s beautiful medical portrait hanging inside our Municipal Building today !! Pictured below are some close up views showing doctor’s qualifications & degree…..Dr David Wistar MD FACS….(See full Bio Here) It wasn't until 1830 when Reverend John Quinn came via boat from New Britain Connecticut landing just upstream from where Urbana now stands that Methodists started coming to preach & baptize hereabouts!! This large group included many famous abolitionists such as James Stillwell who later became Mayor Of Chicago (See Bio Below) !! Numerous schools were built throughoutChampaign ensuing various religious denominations teaching children herefrom infanthood thru high school matriculation !! Note: Many current buildings including UI Hospitals were built subsequent to1920s thanks to federal funding provided during World War I!!! Many interesting artifacts have been discovered throughoutChampaign history including tools used by early farmers such as hoes, sickles and pitchforks dating back over 100 years + Revolutionary War documents & #1 selling item for preachers / missionaries across Great Lakes region buying rights To preach religious services etc… Please see attached photo gallery below for more information
