Champaign, Illinois was founded in 1818 by John P. Mahoning and his wife, Catherine Emmett. The city is located on the Mississippi River and is the county seat of Champaign County. As of the 2010 census, Champaign had a population of 82,782. The city is home to two universities- UIUC and Illinois State University- as well as many smaller colleges and universities. While some aspects of Chicagoland culture remain strong in Champaign, most residents are now suburbanites who commute to downtown for jobs or education. Today, Champaign is an important center for research in computer science, engineering, health care technology, business administration, psychology and other Fields of Science and letters. It has been praised for its parks system which features more than 120 miles (200 km) of parkways that include five championship golf courses. The first settlers to what would become Champaign came from Massachusetts in 1811 with the arrival of Reverend James Dolan and his family. Dolan owned land near Urbana on the Illinois River where he built a log cabin known as "Dolan's Corners." In 1815 Dolan married Jane Welsh who also lived near Urbana. They arrived with their three children- Anne Welsh (1814-1892), Patrick Welsh (1800-1872) and Mary Cogswell (1797-1868). James Welsh died soon after they settled in present day Champaign when his wagon overturned while traveling east on I street later that year. By 1830 seven families already lived in what would become Champaign: Englishman Richard Barnes (born 1785), Irishman William Kavanagh (1788/89 - died 1860), Germans Peter Reuter(1786/87 - died 1840), Swedes Gottlieb Hassig(1790/91 - 1862), George Sperry(1800 - 1865) and John Pritzker(1800 - 1865). In 1835 a group of German farmers named Hahn established a farmstead west of present day Urbana on the north side of the river just east of Waterloo Road.. This area became known as "Pritzker's Corners" because its founder was German immigrant Johann Friedrich Pritzker who arrived in 1828 from Bavaria.. In 1840 John Mahone purchased 20 acres northeast of Pritzkers Corner from Hahn for $100.. From this point forward much development took place around what are currently UIUC’s campus boundaries including housing developments on both sides of I Street between Woodruff Avenue and Maxwell Road; Pritzker’s Corners; North Park; Goodrich Place; South Park; Central Park; Cook Village; Armour Placeupple Placeoungle Gardens which included residences for scientists engaged in agriculture at nearby Normal University.; Chicago Plantation which extended along Woodruff Avenue from today’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital to Sycamore Street near Jackson Square.; Maharajah Residency complex next to Anna Mhuda Stadium across Haagen Drive from Union Carbide Companyplantation;; Church Quadrangle bounded by First Streets Corinthian Avenue & Washington Boulevard & Reitz Court ; most recently Wabash District courthouse within walking distance.) It should be noted that earlyChampagnians were composed mostlyof ruralIrish Catholics who had emigrated during times such as the Great Famine years earlier., particularly those living southwestward along Illinois' Sangamon River Valley., among others.: UIUC students protest against tuition increase
