Champaign, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 53,824 at the 2010 census. It is the third most populous city in Illinois and the fifth most populous city in Chicago metropolitan area. The city is located on the east bank of the Willamette River and Lisle Road forms its eastern border. Champaign's downtown business district (including State Street) extends from Wabash Avenue to Randolph Street. The first permanent settler in what would become Champaign was Samuel Ellsworth in 1811. He founded a farm on the site of present-day Ellsworth Park and named it after himself, Champaign Township. In 1818, John Marshall moved to what is now Addison County and opened a small store there before moving to Urbana in 1825 to open a general store/merchant marine office with other investors including James Ketchum and William McKinney. Ketchum became one ofChampaign's first mayors when he served as mayor from 1830 to 1840; he also served as postmaster for about twenty years beginning in 1827 (). The first academic institution established within the township was Knox College which opened its doors on October 15th, 1829 under auspices of then-President Zachary Taylor with instruction offered by Professor Nathan Silliman (an early graduate of Yale University). In addition to college education, Knox also offered agricultural training courses for Emigrant Society members who had come overland from England during that period (). In 1840, due to financial issues brought on by low commodity prices and overpopulation (), Champaign Township disbanded but continuing operations until 1862 when all vestiges were finally erased by ordinance due largely to Mayor Amos Alcott’s efforts (). On March 11th of that year (the date today marking Commemoration Day for Illinois' incorporation as an American state), City Council adopted an ordinance creating Champaign as its own municipality with boundaries defined at Wabash Avenue southward through Randolph Street eastward (), thence north along Cherry Lane past Campusview Drive northwestward () . By this act, City Council assumed complete responsibility for all civic functions within the town limits while still acknowledging ties with Urbann
