Champaign, Illinois is a town in Champaign County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,519 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first people to live here were the Potawatomi Indians and their chief prophet, Kankakeewegosh. When white settlers began arriving in this area in 1809 they called it "Turtleback." They built a log cabin on the east side of what is now State Street and named it Turtleback Meadows after their Indian enemy who had killed many of them. In 1827, David Levy platted out what is now Champaign Township on land that he had bought from the Potawatomi Indians. He named it after his friend and mentor George Brown who had died earlier that year while fighting against Native Americans near Cairo, Illinois. In 1830 John Prentice organized a group of farmers to try and get title to some of the rich bottomland around Urbana which they believed would become an agricultural center if developed properly. They met with no success so in 1838 Prentice founded what became known as Enterprise Academy which later became Urbana University. The townspeople quickly came up with names for their new community - Farmer's Village (1839), Northwestern Depot (1840), Prairie View A&M College (1846), and finally Champaign Township (1850). In 1850 when Abraham Lincoln was elected President of America he sent his brother-in-law John Wilkes Booth to try and kill him in Springfield but Booth failed because he didn't have enough time to get there before Lincoln's inauguration took place on April 14th thousand nine hundred fifty four legally required days later! Champaign has been home to many famous people including: George Washington Carver who grew up here; Abraham Lincoln; Thomas Edison; Franklin D Roosevelt; Joseph Stalin; Neil Armstrong
