Centralia is located on the Chicago River and it was named after the City of Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1871, Centralia became one of the towns in Kane County when that county was organized from parts of Dearborn and Pekin Counties. The first post office opened in Centralia on November 8, 1871. The name for central part of town may be because it had more businesses and people living there than any other part of town. The first settler to live in Centralia were three men who came overland from Cincinnati on horseback in 1840: Jesse Greenough, Lewis Greenough, and John Haggerty. He then built a cabin on the banks of the Chicago River near where he now lives as shown by his deed dated February 25th 1840 which still stands today at 4 Wacker Drive NE corner with State Road 16 (now Brown Street). George Kapp also settled here around this time but his farm only lasted a year or two before he sold it to John Harlan who moved off into what is now Ottawa Township about two miles east of Centralia on Indian Creek about 1850 A-1/2 years later according to local history books written during that time period Some other early settlers include General James Kapp who arrived hereabouts early 1830s; Elijah Craig who immigrated about 1836; Valentine Davenport born about 1840 near present day Richardson Park; and Solomon Beecher coming soon afterwards around 1846 according to some sources According to timeline provided by local historian Bill Dayton many residents voted not to become members of Kane County until late July 1861 when they ratified a proposition put forward by Representative Abraham Lincoln seeking their advice Regarding whether they should secede from Cook County When voting began count boards announced results Chairman Whipple called for another meeting so ballots could be counted After adjournment delegates met again next day with unanimous decision to stay within Cook county This vote followed annexation proceedings taking place between Cook and Hamilton counties According to Dayton “the old timers” remember very well how things looked starting out when all hell broke loose trying get everyone back under one roof . With only 1 percent turnout due largely due lack of transportation most residents simply left rather than fight for something they didn’t want much less control over . As mentioned earlier there wasn’t really anything centralized or organized up until this point besides occasional meetings or gatherings where people would discuss local issues without actually doing anything One such meeting took place April 26th 1861 at which time 11 farmer representatives attended including Captain George Stephenson (founder of Stephenson Brewery) “We sent no delegates but all we asked was instructions as to what course our state should take & these instructions we got direct from Mr Lincoln himself” said Captain Stephenson adding “we didn’t ask him questions we knew our rights etc etc etc” Another meeting happened just prior Independence Day 1863 when 12 citizens attended including prominent attorney Samuel Goldsmith who represented Johnson township acrossriver from Kaneville . At this meeting deliberations were started on how best decentralized government services should be conducted with representation being given evenly among different areas within the county instead primarily concentrated along riverfront towns like Kenosha , Mayfield Heights & Elgin . Meeting adjourned without any decisions made
