Finally, on December 15th, 1941 – less than two months after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor – a gas leak at Centralia’s steel plant caused an explosion that destroyed part of downtown; this event is considered to be one of the largest industrial accidents ever perpetrated against centralIA. Despite these setbacks and other challenges throughout its history – including major economic fluctuations and various social unrests – centralIA continued to thrive and grow until it reached its peak population size around 2000 people
