Centralia, Ill., is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,692 at the 2010 census. Centralia is adjacent to Rockford and Riverdale. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first documented mention of Centralia was in 1802 when John Todd committed suicide there after being expelled from the Baptist church his family attended. A post office called Centralia was established in 1824, and remained in operation until it closed on July 1, 1958. In 1860, local citizens formed the Centralia and Ottawa Railroad to provide transportation for their businesses and residents east of Rockford Road. The railroad reached Centralia in 1865 and continued serving the community until 1951 when it was absorbed into National Railways as the Milwaukee Road's Western Division. The town's namesake comes from George Washington Carver who moved to central Illinois from Decatur, Alabama in 1889 after working on a farm near Rockford with his brother-in-law Michael Curry (1837-1920). Carver was instrumental in developing many aspects of modern life including cereal production in Illinois; he also founded The Peanut Corporation which became one of America's largest peanut dealers. His enterprise spawned several other businesses that continue today such as Pioneer HiFi Inc., MidAmerica Farms Inc., and American Breeders Association Auctioneers & Brokers Inc.. Carver Elementary School opened its doors on November 1st 1906 within walking distance of both Centerville Shopping Center (now known asCenterville Mall) and Centerville High School (now known asCentral Avenue Middle School). In 1955, Centerville Intermediate School opened adjacent to Carbondale Junior/ Senior High School which had been built earlier that year by parents who were caught up in the Great Migration Westward which saw millions leave Southern Illinois for jobs opportunities in larger cities across North America during the early 1960s. An additional elementary school - Carver Garden Elementary - opened just south of Carbondale Junior/ Senior High School Campus shortly thereafter followed by Central Avenue Middle School annexingcarbondale junior high school’s Art Room building during 1969-70 school year under then Superintendent Driscoll’s leadership which created one large facility accommodating all students grades 4th through 8th inclusive with an attached library providing resources needed for art instruction along with administrative offices support staff necessary for curriculum development while also accommodating special needs program like gifted or talented students whose families could not afford much formalized schooling beyond home education due solely to financial constraints
Centralia is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,853 at the 2010 census. Centralia was incorporated on November 15, 1892. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first white settler in Centralia was John Fenton who arrived in 1836 and settled near what is now the junction of Wabash Avenue and Michigan Avenue. In 1843 he married Anna Maria Krieger and they had three children: John (1845-1915), Mary (1848-1940) and Edward (1851-1929). In 1850 Fenton bought five acres of land south of present day Centralia from Nicholas Jordon for $200. He named his new settlement "Fentonville" after himself and his family. In 1854 Centralia became the seat of government for Cook County when it was organized from parts of McLean Township, Kane County, and Will County. At that time its population numbered only 3 people. That year William Daley appointed George Stephenson as county treasurer with power to purchase lands within Cook County for public use if necessary. Stephenson built the first courthouse in Centralia which functioned until 1912 when it burned down due to a fire started by an employee at the local meat market adjacent to it. In 1861 Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest's army invaded Illinois during the American Civil War and destroyed much of East Stroudsburg including Centralia along with other towns east of Washington Street in what is now Lawrence Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania; this event is generally considered to be one reason why central Illinois became a separate slave state instead of following Missouri's example which would have put central Illinois squarely within Kansas Territory under General Sam Houston's administration should that territory have become free soil following Union victory over Mexico at Battle Of Buena Vista on October 12th 1865.) During Reconstruction efforts after TheCivil War many African Americans relocated to central Illinois because most northern states were not yet open to black citizens withoutproperty ownership or access to education or jobs opportunities like those available in Mississippi or Alabama where slavery continued until 1865 both before and after TheWar].
