In 1836, David Dixon donated land for a steamboat landing on the Du Page River near present-day Centralia; this became known as Dixon Landing Park (). This site served as an important port for goods arriving and departing from what is now Chicago during the early 1840s; it also served as an early center for education withinDuPage County because of its natural resources and easy access to students attending local schools. Dixon Landing Park would become one of several key sites used by Charles Witte to develop his design concepts forIllinois State Normal School (later DePaul University) which he founded in 1847; Witte's original plan called for three buildings: a library/classroom building, a gymnasium/sports arena, and eventually a dormitory/student housing complex which would be connected by an underground walkway into one large structure. In 1850–51 Witte constructed two more buildings: another library/classroom building (the Hawkins Building) andanother gymnasium/ sports arena (the Snively Arena). These five structures were dedicated on November 6, 1850 – making them all the first periodical buildings east of the Mississippi River . In 1865–66 Witte again developed his plans for ISNALES which included four new structures: another library/classroom building (the Daley Building), another gymnasium/ sports arena (the Hull Arena),condominiums along Lake Michigan Avenue between First Street & Canal Drive bordering West Side Highway ,and finallya hospital adjacent to South Side Highway . All these structures were dedicated on October 1st 1966 – making ISNALES one of only two UIC institutions everto have been named after presidents or prime ministers – both others being DePaul University’s “School of Business Administration” facility completed later that year just north of ISNALES off State Street across from McCormick Place.– In addition to its importance as an educational landmark throughout DuPage County.,Witte's designs also helped spawn many famous Illini suchas basketball coach Rick Majerus ;actor Kirk Douglas ;rugby player Len Bias ;and singer Lou Rawls
