Centralia was platted on November 10, 1819, by John Pemberton and his son Daniel Pemberton as an Indian trading post on the Chicago River between what are now Douglas Heights to the north and West Side neighborhoods to the south. The name "Centralia" likely originated with this location since it lay at or near one of several trade routes that connected Lake Michigan with eastern Illinois and Missouri. The site of present-day Centralia was first occupied by Sauk people in 1772 when they built their winter home on the west bank of the Chicago River opposite modern day North Avenue/Highway 14th Street. By 1800, more than 20 wigwams had been burned down by French traders during their search for fur trappers operating out of Fort Dearborn (now Chicago). In 1816–1817, Ira Allen moved from Ohio to Clearfield Township (now Addison) County in order to purchase land east of what is now Prairie du Chien Road and south of Rockford Road which he called "Allen's Prairie." He began building a log cabin here on September 14, 1816; it may have been one of only two buildings erected along this stretch of road before his death less than three years later on December 5th at age 44 from natural causes after days spent huntingbuffalo near what is now Peoria Street within minutes walking distance of his new home. In early 1819 John Pemberton established himself as a trader along river banks just west-southwest of where Centralia stands today - becoming one of its earliest settlers. On November 10th same year he set up shop at what would become known as Pemberton's Landing downstream from where he currently resides having previously explored most all around present day Illinois side including finding land east across Rice Creek (northwest corner Of current day Clintonville). Although little remains there today due to over development it still served as an important stop point for travelers until railroads were built further inland many years later which caused much growth & change along riverbank communities throughout Midwest
