Centralia is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,062 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse towns in Illinois. The town was founded on December 12, 1871 by Nicholas Waguespack and his brother John Waguespack as a branch of Peoria. Centralia grew quickly due to its location on the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1916, when it became part of Chicago, Centralia lost much of its growth but still remains an important agricultural center with a large cotton crop and other businesses. The first firearm hat manufacturer in Centralia was Dutchman's Hat Manufacturing Company which opened its doors in 1906. The company made hats for soldiers during World War I and also produced hats for baseball players and other professional athletes. In 1938, FN Herstal Firearms Corporation moved to Centralia from West Allis, Wisconsin and began making firearms including handguns and rifles under the name 'FN Manufacturing'. The first residents of Centralia were three men who arrived by wagon train from Decatur on November 3, 1848: David Dudley, Wm. Tilton, and John Haggerty. They built a log cabin near the now-demolished Centralia Sawmill on what is now North First Street. The first post office at Centralia was established on December 10, 1849; it was called Echo Mills because all mail went through Chicago until1870 when the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad completed its line to Peoria. In 1850–51 there were six families living in Centralia; by 1860–61 there were twenty-eight people living there including twelve farmers and four lumbermen. In 1861–62 five churches were built: Trinity Lutheran (now Stoney Creek Evangelical Lutheran) Church (1860), Methodist Episcopal (1863), Presbyterian (1865), Baptist (1866), and Congregationalist (1902). A school opened in 1862 but became inactive due to lack of students; it reopened in 1868 after being purchased by Mrs. Catharine Beecher Hooker from Aurora Township for $5 per student per year with no tuition paid by parents or children thus making it an open school which eventually evolved into Prairie View A&M University today. A sawmill started up again in 1865 just outside of town under new ownership but stopped operations due to financial difficulties two years later; it reopened under new management in 1870 as the J Bachmann Sawmills Incorporated which continued operation until 1954 when it merged with Ames Manufacturing Company forming Ames Manufacturing Company Ltd.; this company manufactured trucks and other vehicles until its bankruptcy during World War II which resulted in many jobs going away for retirees like George Bachman who lost his job at Ames Manufacturing Company Ltd.; he then moved back home to centralia where he continues working at his old job today as part of the city's history museum

However, through redevelopment efforts over the past few decades Centralia has regained some of its lost economic clout and remains an important cultural center within Cook County despite struggling with poverty rates among its residents; 30% of total income below poverty line according to2010 US Census data
