The first settlers in what would become Centralia were farmers who arrived from Indiana in 1836. They began to cultivation land along the Sangamon River which became known as "Greenback Bend". The original nine-room schoolhouse was built in 1840 and served as a community center until it burned down in 1854. The first post office was established at Centralia on October 26, 1841 under the name "Plymouth". It moved to its current location near the present day intersection of Kedzie Avenue and West Adams Boulevard in 1850. By 1861 there were only four residents living at Centralia but it rapidly grew with new construction including a gristmill (1861), store (1862), cotton gin (1863), sawmill (1864), bank (1865) and frame churches (1867-68). In 1865 when two railroads came through town–the Chicago & Northwestern Railway and then an extension of the Union Pacific Railroad–Centralia had enough development to support a hotel/motel called Journal Inn which opened on November 1, 1865. On May 15th 1907 Clarence Ewing organized what would later be called the Knights Templar Order Of America at Journal Inn which soon outgrew centralIA's limitations as a lodge hall/community center serving mainly local business people with no knowledge or interest beyond their immediate circles or interests...From this point forward many things changed for Centralia; most noticeably increasing industrial production due to advances made by both railroad companies throughout Northern Illinois During World War II much heavy equipment such as tanks etc., was manufactured here including parts for B-17 Flying Fortress bombers used during World War II being produced right here at Journal Inn; also aircraft engines turning out at Phelps Engine Works across State Street from where they were designed before they went into production overseas Many famous personalities who have lived or worked in centralIA over time include: Julius Caesar Rodney; Ulysses S Grant Woodson; Calumet Bridge Builder George Stephenson; Mayor Richard Minsky...CentralIA remains largely unchanged today despite recent surges in population growth making it one of very few communities operating primarily within its own boundaries without any outside influences whatsoever...Many aspects associated with early 20th century life such as social activities such as dances given each year around Memorial Day weekend are still celebrated today despite slowly dwindling attendance due largely to economic reasons although some events do still occur sporadically In addition many places like Greenbacks Bend have been preserved even if not completely adaptable for modern times retaining their historical charm while also providing experiences unavailable elsewhere
