In 1871, George Washington Stephenson built a canal through central Illinois linking Lake Michigan with what is now Indiana and Ohio; this canal became known as the Chicago & Northwestern Railway (C&NW). The company built several large hotels along its route including one near present day Union Station which remains today one of the largest hotel complexes in North America In 1902–1903, Centralia voters passed a referendum authorizing annexation by Kane County but no action was taken because Kane County officials felt that annexing would deprive them of tax revenue from central Illinois businesses located within their boundaries In 1933–1934 during World War II portions of Cook County west of downtown were annexed by federal government under the guise of creating urban areas for military personnel barracks From 1945 until 1990 most residents living east or south of I-90 identified themselves as "Centralian" rather than "Kane Valley resident." Centralia, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It was founded on July 12, 1854 by William E. Central and James H. Weller as a small community to provide a landing for the steamboats that transported goods between Chicago and the other Midwestern settlements. The first post office in Centralia was established on December 15, 1855. The population of Centralia grew rapidly during the early 19th century due to timber supply from the adjacent forests and railways connecting nearby cities. In 1871, when Illinois became a state, Centralia became one of its original townships. In 1902, when centralia incorporated as a village, it had a population of 1,500 people; however, by 1910 it had shrunk to just over 500 residents due to rapid growth in neighboring villages. In 1918–1919 the Village Council decided that centralia would be split into two parts: an eastern half which would become Aurora (then called East Aurora) while the western half would become West Aurora (then called North Aurora). The split helped increase tourism in both areas and led to increased business opportunities for local businesses such as meatpacking plants and lumberyards; however it also caused some conflict among residents about what form of government should be responsible for these new communities. In 1950–51 voters approved an amendment to the town charter which introduced term limits for members of the village council; this decision later led to criticism from some councillors who felt they were not given enough opportunity to serve full terms. In 1984–1985 efforts began to develop what would eventually become Centralia Park; development included construction of three shopping malls and office buildings including Oneonta Mall (now Oneonta Station), which opened in 1987 replaced another small shopping center built in 1961 which had been condemned as too dangerous for retail use after several fires occurred therein). Centralia, Illinois was founded by the James and Esther Kapp family in 1825. The town originally grew around a sawmill on the banks of the Fox River. By 1850, Centralia had a population of over 100 people. In 1855, Centralia became the county seat of Cook County. The following year, the Kapp family donated land to build a new courthouse and jail in Centralia. The building was completed in 1861 and served as the county courthouse until it was replaced by the current building in 1990.
