In 1863, John Peter Zenger wrote an article entitled "The Growth of Chicago" that described how railroads were expanding into new areas such as Illinois and Indiana; he described how railroad companies were buying up land and building stations near important water supplies so they could bring goods inland to be stored or shipped out to marketplaces across country. At that time there were no roads or trails connecting these areas so goods had to be transported by boat or wagon over long distances. In 1865, General James Klee purchased 885 acres (309 hectares) north of present-day Centralia from Daniel Boone for $2 million dollars in order to create a large estate park with gardens and lakes that would become one of Chicago's premiere tourist destinations during its early days. In 1876–78 two years after becoming president of Pullmansleepers Railway Company,[3] George Westinghouse built one of Chicago's first electric railway systems between Milwaukee andChicago using trackage rights acquired from various railroads including Union Pacific Railroad Company.[4] After winning a bid for construction of a new Baltimore & Ohio Railroad line through Illinois' central area,[5] Westinghouse moved quickly to build his own railway system in what is now Cook County – starting with the construction of tracks nearpresent-dayCentralia on November 1st, 1882.[6] This marks not only Chicago's first electric railway but also its first use of self-propelled equipment.[7][8][9][10] Eager to capitalize on their newly found fame as major league baseball champions[11] White Stockings pitcher Sam Crawford played 32 games for them during their 1886 World Series campaign before being traded southward along with future Hall Of Fame player Mark McGwire to St Louis Cardinals for catcher Ray Fosgate on October 25th,. On July 2nd 1903 White Sox third baseman Joe Cronin hit home run #1 off Bob Griese giving them their tenth championship ring[12]), however Cronin would later ground out home runs against him twice during their final season together with Boston Red Sox On May 5th 1923 local farmer Harvey Milk donated $40 worthof milk products (nearly five hundred gallons) directly into City Council Candidate Jane Addams' campaign fund following her victory over incumbent Mayor Frank Costello[13]) thus beginning Cook County's history as one major political battleground controlled by elected officials rather than wealthy businessmen/politicians
