Centralia was founded on October 1, 1855 by John Ladd and his brother-in-law James McKinney. It became a town on January 1, 1857. On July 10, 1870, Centralia incorporated as a city under the provisions of the Chicago Municipal Code. The first school in Centralia opened in 1856 and was built by John Ladd and James McKinney. A second school opened in 1861 and was also built by Ladd and McKinney. In 1865, Centralia had a population of 100 people when it incorporation as an independent city; however due to financial difficulties it merged with Rockford on February 25th that year to form one large municipality with a total population of 1,500 people In 1865-1868 there were three major fires in Centralia: The Glenview fire which destroyed most of the buildings near Main Street; The Tomahawk fire which destroyed parts of both First Baptist Church (now known as First Methodist) and Elmwood Baptist Church (now known as Christ Episcopal) on Second Avenue; And The American Legion post fire which burned down part of Fourth Street between Market Street and Burton Road In 1886-1901 there were two major floods that affected central Illinois: The Niles flood which struck central Illinois on November 5th; And The Peoria flood which struck central Illinois on December 14th On October 1st 1855 John Ladd founded what would become known as "Centralia" while he lived nearby Mayfair Manor John Haggerty who later served 2 terms Mayor & City Council @CentralIA1920 thru 1924 started construction soon after buying land from original founders
