Cary is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. Cary was founded in 1836 by John and Jane Cary as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The Cary post office was discontinued in 1881, but it reopened in 1897 under the name of Elmira. It has been the seat of government for Carver Township since 1912. The population of Cary was 1,849 at the 2000 census. John and Jane Cary started farming in what is now Cary after moving from Utica, New York to start a family in 1836. The couple raised crops and sold goods they made from their farm until 1860 when they decided to move to Illinois because of the spread of slavery into that state. In 1865, John married Sarah Henson and together they starting a family which would grow to include sixteen children before Sarah died in 1895. John continued farming until his death in 1903, leaving behind an estate valued at $1 million dollars (equal to about $27 million today). In 1912, Carver Township changed its name from Utica to Elmira due to local support for renaming town after nearby townships such as Elizabethtown (now Elkhart), North Hero (now West Dundee), Rome (now Wood Dale), North Aurora (now Naperville), and White River Junction (now Chicago). The first home built on the lot where present-day Elmira sits was erected by Mrs. Crouse around 1840-1845; she moved into it soon after with her husband James Crouse Jr., one of six children born to James Sr./Mrs. Crouse/Flanders who had emigrated from Ulster County, Ireland some years earlier. By 1870 all six families lived on site: four parents and two children plus their spouses or otherfamily members living with them during both childhood years only; one child may have gone off school altogether while living with his grandparents while others attended school sporadically due To poor schools infrastructure back then many farmers were forced tp build new schools even if there already existed ones since most residents either did not have money or could not afford it so any old building became “new” again! There are several interesting notes about this period during which our ancestors resided hereabouts: First Natives played no important role politically or militarily early on as Indians had done throughout much OF US history; white men bought land hereabouts earliest too but mainly because necessities like industry & commerce led people away from farms rather than towards them rarley; many notable people were born & raised hereabouts including President Ulysses S Grant (& wife Julia) ; General Robert E Lee fought Union forces near Elmira latter part of 19th century while our fathersfolk labored side-by-side & literally ran things hereabouts w/the help o’ NeighboringAgencies; especiallygood ol’ boys like Judge David Brewster formed deep personal connections w/many prominent citizens HERE thru intergenerational contactism (& words); etc etc etc…..We live within earshot today (& see same folks everyday!) tht should give you an idea o’ how special we feel!
