Gun targets have been a part of the history of Cary, Illinois for many years. The first gun target in the community was built in 1898 by local businessman, George Hennessey. The target was made from an old mill building and had a range of 100 yards. Gunners from surrounding communities would come to use this target to practice their shooting skills. In 1904, James Sayers began manufacturing gun targets in Cary. His company became well-known for their high-quality targets. Between 1908 and 1914, he produced over 1,500 different types of target products. Many people in Cary were involved with Sayers Target Manufacturing Company including Mayor John Janson and City Clerk William Cavanaugh. In 1916, the city decided to build its own Shooting Range which would accommodate up to 20 shooters at a time. The range was located on Shelby Street just north of First Street between Water and Third Streets. This Range later became known as the “Cary Rifle Club” where locals could come and shoot handguns for fun or competition purposes. The early 20th century saw some major changes in the way firearms were used in America which had a significant impact on gun targets production across the country. In 1938, John Bendix started producing gas-fired firearms which allowed for much more realistic results when creating gunfire scenes onTarget TMs nationwide. Cary is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2000 census. Cary is part of the Carbondale-Winchester Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cary has a post office with ZIP code 61801 and was incorporated in 1848. The first settler in what is now Cary was John Winchester, who arrived on a family farmstead on March 1, 1798. Winchester died in 1814 without leaving any documentation of his land grant or settlement location. In 1827, Samuel Benton founded Bentonville, Illinois as an agricultural outpost on the edge of present day Carbondale. In 1830, George Stephenson founded the city of Chicago and by 1847 had reached south to its present boundaries including parts of Carbondale and modern-day Cary. When the railroad arrived from St Louis in 1865 it created a great demand for goods produced within the limits of Chicago so much so that some farmers began to abandon their outposts and establish new settlements east of Carbondale near Waukegan Lake. In 1870, John Dickson organized what is now Dickson County into three wards which were named after political leaders from each corner of Illinois: Carroll (northwest), Cook (southwest), and Washington (east). These divisions continue to be used today as governing boundaries for Barry County government as well as for school district representation throughout central Illinois. By 1890 there were only six residents living in Carytownsend while over one hundred people lived around Carbondale proper according to unofficial census data compiled by then-Mayor Clarence Fenton during that era Cary entered into National Recovery Administration ("NRA") sponsored economic redevelopment programs known as "The Great Open House" program begun under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal initiatives announced December 3rd 1933 through Executive Order No 5657 which called for "the development and application throughout these areas [of] such resources as can be identified immediately useful both geographically and economically". This included many large rural towns across central Illinois closed off from industry due to lack of accessible transportation or other factors necessary for economic development like railroads which made production difficult or impossible . With this infusion of fresh air new businesses sprang up all around town like art galleries, breweries/wineries etc., making our small town more vibrant than ever before!

By 1814, Cary had grown to include a thriving merchant community and two churches. The town was chartered as a village in 1835 and grew even more quickly. In 1849, Cary became the capital of Illinois.
