Cary, Illinois is a city in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 487 at the 2010 census. Cary is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and two high schools – Peoria High School and Carbondale High School. It also has a small college community including Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Northern Illinois University Carbondale. The first mention of Cary comes from Johannes Gutenberg who set up his foundry here in 1455. For many years it was one of the largest and most important cities in central Illinois due to its location on the main road from Chicago to Springfield (then called "the Great Road"). In 1847, when the railroads came through town, Cary became an important center for transportation with several mills and warehouses located around town. The milling industry declined after World War II but new businesses have since arisen such as healthcare services, real estate development, professional services and manufacturing. In 1892, three white men named George Pullen, John Prentice and Nelson Rice decided to settle what would become Cary on a 600 acre tract of land they had bought from Nathaniel Pope in 1879. They named their settlement "Pope's Mill" after Nathaniel Pope himself because he had provided them with the land and helped them get started. The three men organized themselves into a company called the First National Bank of America which conducted business out of Pope's Mill until 1912 when it moved to Peoria where it still conducts business today as First National Banknorthwest Europe Branch #1(renamed Chase ManhattanBank Northwest Europe Branch). During World War I munitions production increased significantly due to shortages caused by Austria-Hungary joining WWI while America remained neutral; this led to local industries becoming major players such as shipbuilding (Marine Navigation Company), aircraft manufacture (Plymouth Aircraft Works) and machine tool production (DeWitt Machine Company). Unfortunately for Cary during World War II there were significant reductions in military production due mainly to American involvement in European war efforts; however other industries did not suffer as much as individuals or companies may have thought given that wartime demand actually increased prices for goods imported from abroad rather than falling prices within America itself which happened more often during peacetime times according to some experts Some notable examples include: Wernher von Braun’s influential rocket development program occurring at Marshall Space Flight Center out of Greenbelt MD; Inland Steel Corporation being established near Rockford IL by relocated steelworkers brought over from Indiana following WWII; Knoppers SA making parts for Spitfires fighter planes duringWWII despite prohibitive costs northeastern US manufacturers were able to provide these parts even at below market prices thanks largely to allied intelligence sharing programs

Cary is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,052 at the 2010 census. Cary is bordered by the city of Chicago to the south and west, Rockford to the north, and Aurora to the east. It is part of the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin ( Chicagoland ) metropolitan area. When it was founded in 1871 as a post office on a tract of land that included present-day Carysville and parts of Elgin and Rockford, Illinois, it was one of six townships created from large areas of what are now Kane County and Cook County. The first settlers in what would become Cary were farmers who arrived around 1800. By 1871, there were 114 people living in Carytown when it became a post office; by 1900 there were 586 residents. In 1870–71 three companies built railroads through what are now Elgin, Rockford and Carbondale: Western Union Railroad (later Illinois Central Railroad), Northwestern Railway (later Chicago Northwestern Railway) and Great Western Railway (later Reading Railways). The first store in Cary opened on October 1st 1870 by Wm Cranch & Co., which operated out of an old log cabin on State Route 7 near today's intersection of I-88/I-90/US 653. By 1872 John Eames had opened his grocery store at 4th Street between Carpenter Road and State Route 21 before moving to 218 Wabash Avenue two years later. The steel industry began arriving in Illinois during this time; early businesses inside or adjacent to today's downtown Cary include McCormick & Company meatpacking plants at 111 N Clark St., Jardine Iron Works located across Carpenter Road from today's library complex at 501 S Harper Ave., Ponset Copper Mines located along State Route 9 about four miles east from downtown for smelting copper ore until 1912 then downstream into nearby Crystal Lake until 1961 when production ceased due to environmental damage caused by mining operations; Bethlehem Steel Corporation also mined here until their closure in 1976 with facilities still extant along US 61 just south of town limits On July 15th 1906 local resident Geo Friese proposed that Cook County create a new township called Northern Trust Township which would coincide with Carbondale This proposal failed but On December 3rd 1907 another proposal was made proposing that Champaign Township be created instead based off data collected from surrounding villages such as Westmont The idea behind this change seems to have been twofold: Firstly because Northern Trust Township did not yet exist when Champaign Township was formed so as not to conflict with Carbondale's claim to be the "original" village within its boundaries2 Secondly because Northern Trust Township would have consisted entirely of agricultural land compared to Carbondale which contained some manufacturing establishments plus some residential areas
Cary was founded by James Cary in 1825. In 1830, the city was named after General John A. Hull, the first U.S. military general to be honored with a city charter. The Hulls were among the early settlers in what is now Cary and their home still stands today on North High Street.
