Cary is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. The Cary post office was established in 1877 and discontinued operation in 1957. It was re-established in 1959 and still operate today. The town of Cary was founded by two brothers named John and James Cary on March 14, 1877. They were farmers who moved to the area from rural Indiana after their father's death. The first store opened in 1879 and the first school district was organized in 1881. In 1903, the farmlands of what is now Cary were donated to the community by Cyrus McCormick Company president David Sibley as part of a land donation program for small towns throughout Illinois. In 1907, William Hovey became mayor of Cary after winning an election against incumbent Nicholas Gabora Jr.. He would later serve as state senator from Kane County from 1912 until he died in 1929. In 1916, Stonington native George Waring came to town and began working for Hovey at the local paper mill before becoming city editor at McCormick's newspaper plant downtown. Waring would later become managing partner with his brother Harry Waring at Chicago Tribune Publishing Co., which would eventually be bought by The New York Times Company (TNT). In 1925, Mayor Hovey appointed Jens Kappeler as director of public works within Municipal Affairs Department with responsibility for improving roads and parks throughout the community while also developing new industry within the town limits including agricultural production among others near Interstate 65 north of town center between Highways 136th east (now I-35)and 137th west (now I-670). With this new authority Kappeler began construction on what is now known as "the Kappelman Bridge" connecting downtown with Carver Road northwest of town center crossing over Lake Michigan just east of where US Highway 362 crosses into Kane County from Indiana Avenue south side approximately midway along today's border between Kane County - old Carroll Township - present day Downers Grove Township - current Stonington Township - old Carroll Village - downriver current Crystal Lake village (then just called "Lake Crystal") about one mile southeast along today's line between theseSeveral other projects included: widening Douglas Street from four lanes to six lanes; construction of a new stormwater pond adjacent to Central Park; erection or installation Of several large streetlights; repair/replacement/updates To many Old School buildings that had not been touched since they were built decades earlier including those located currently on North Spring Street just east of South Main Street across today's line contiguous downriver road extending northward almost reaching today's shoreline opposite old Seminary building site now occupied by State Fairgrounds parking lot
