Cary is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,074 at the 2010 census. Cary was platted in 1873 and named for Captain John Cary of the U.S. Navy who had been killed in action during the Mexican-American War. The post office was established in 1875 and changed its name to Cary in 1911. The first store on what is now Cary's main square opened in 1875 by Wm Hines and his son-in-law, Jno Cramer of nearby Decatur Township. By 1890, there were three stores and two hotels in the town with a population of 350 people living on Main Street (now US Highway 31). In 1912 the Griggs family built a frame schoolhouse on what is now First Avenue which served as the town's central library until it burned down in 1951. In 1916, residents of Cary petitioned to become part of Rock Island County after they were refused membership by their fellow townsfolk on the grounds that they did not have enough residents to support an independent county government. On November 20, 1916, they held a special election to determine whether or not they would join Rock Island County; over 60% of those voting accepted the offer and Cary became one of its six townships The postwar years saw many changes for which Cary is no stranger: from textile manufacturing plants closing down throughout 1948 due to technological advances to suburban development beginning around 1960 bringing increased traffic into town center making it difficult for businesses to stay open; however business revived when new medical facilities began operating outlying farms starting up again after being shuttered during World War II
Cary, Illinois was originally a small town in the old Northwest Territory. The first settler in Cary was George Washington who arrived in 1787. In 1814, the United States purchased land from the Indians and founded Chicago. The city of Chicago grew rapidly and by 1870, Cary had only a few hundred residents. In 1871, however, the city of Chicago annexed Cary and its population increased to 10,000.
