The town is named for General and Senator George Washington Cary. Cary is located in Kane County and has a land area of just over 10 square miles. The first settlers in what is now Cary were farmers who arrived from Pennsylvania in the early 18th century. In 1798, General Washington Cary came to Illinois as part of a military expedition that sought to overthrow French rule in North America. He served as surveyor general for Cook County from 1800-1802 and then as justice of the peace for Kane County from 1803-1806. In 1809, General Washington Cary married Catharine Thornton, daughter of Captain John Thornton of Burlington Township, Pennsylvania (then part of Indiana). They moved to Knox County, Illinois where they had five children: four daughters and one son, George Washington Jr., later called George Washington III. In 1815-1817 he represented Knox County on the Illinois House of Representatives as a Democrat under the name John Aiken. The following year he was elected Governor of Illinois on an anti-slavery platform and served two terms before being impeached by President James K. Polk in 1847 for refusing to sign a bill requiring slavery be integrated into the state government. He returned to office but resigned due to health problems three years later when his term ended with passage of an act abolishing slavery within IL He died at his home near Chicago on October 8th, 1850 after suffering from tuberculosis for many years
