Cary is a town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first white person to settle in what is now Cary was Nicholas Joliett on July 4, 1814. He and his family built a cabin on the east side of the river near present-day Civic Center Boulevard. By 1825, Joliett's heirs had organized a school district and by 1830 there were four schools in the community: one for boys and three for girls. In 1831, John Pritchard arrived from Kentucky with his family and set up a farm south of downtown Cary on land that he purchased from Nicholas Joliett. The town was named after him when it was platted as an election precinct in 1837. In 1838, Captain Lewis Cass became interested in bringing over American workers to help with construction projects related to the manufacture of steamboats at Lockport Landing on the Fox River. He offered $10 per day for men and women working six days a week during two months; any children under 12 years old were free. This offer prompted many people to move to Cary because there were no other homes available or because they wanted to be close (or within walking distance) of Cass's boatsman friends at Lockport Landing. When work stopped due to bad weather in 1840, many people hiked more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) back home across snow-covered ground just to get back into town before nightfall so they could vote! In 1845, General David Dixon founded Griggs Mill which processed cornmeal into flour and feed stock for local farmers while also providing employment for some residents of Carytown who did not have access to Millside mills or other agricultural sources of income outside their homes. At first this mill produced only flour but later began producing milk as well which helped keep families fed during hard times during the late 1800s and early 1900s when there was little else available locally or regionally aside from raising livestock or harvesting fruit trees/vegetables etc.. In 1850 millwright James Bogue started building what would become known as “The Old Mill” which still stands today next door to Griggs Mill along State Street between First Avenue North and Second Avenue North – it is said that if you peer inside through its large front windows you can see every hand machined screw that has ever been used on any structure in Illinois! Because so much new development took place around Griggs Mill over time – including expansions onto both sides of State Street where present-day First AvenueNorth meets Second AvenueNorth – it is difficult even today to determine precisely when exactly it opened its doors starting operations; however according as far back as historical records are extant it likely did so sometime around 1850! This particular example confirms that small towns throughout Sangamon County came together not just temporarily while various larger settlements underwent growth but rather permanently following establishment of some sort Of governance or economic stability/power center

In 1847, Governor John Peche added Cary to the Illinois State Register of Historic Places because it exhibited "an unusual degree of cultural significance." In 1860s when many small towns were destroyed by Union troops during the American Civil War due to their neutrality (), Cary became one of several small towns that survived without being looted or burned (). After the war ended in 1865, many prosperous farmers moved into new homes within walking distance of central Cary (). Many residents still live there today as retirees or commuters who enjoy local businesses such as grocery stores and convenience stores close by as well as easy access to public transportation
