Cary, Illinois is a small town located in the heart of the Midwestern United States. The community was originally founded in 1848 by General James K. Polk and his family as a stop on their way to the general election that year. The name Cary comes from a settlement near where the town now stands and was given to it by General John Read after he defeated Confederate troops at the Battle of Carytown on November 10, 1849. The first settler in what is now Cary was Isaac Earle, who arrived around 1800. By 1830, there were over 20 families living in what is now Cary. In 1835, Reverend John White established a Baptist church in what is today the downtown area of Cary. The early years of agriculture were difficult becauseOf course with only one crop per year there wasn’t much money available for farming equipment or seed stock so folks tended to rely more on animal husbandry practices such as herding sheep, haying vegetables or raising cattle and pigs which led to some deforestation as well as some challenges for farmers like water availability or lack thereof that continue to this day. In 1847-48 General James K. Polk made his fateful trip westward across America and stopped at Carbondale on his way northward for the presidential inauguration campaign trail; during his stay he ordered many improvements be made to Carbondale including new roads (the old stagecoach route between Chicago and St Louis still runs through Carbondale) as well as houses being built for local officials such as postmaster Lewis Morrissey (who would later become one of President Franklin D Roosevelt's advisors). After returning home from America's capital city he decided that this small town needed its own store which opened its doors on July 1st, 1848 - just two months after Carbondale had been designated as the seat of government for Cook County by Act No 9th January 1840! That same year also saw advancements within technology when Professor George Stephenson developed an engine called an "hydraulic locomotive" which could pull coaches loaded with passengers over water obstacles! This innovation would soon lead to railways becoming commonplace throughout North America and Central Asia! Since then various businesses have thrived within our small town - most notably Wurlitzer Instruments Corporation which has been headquartered here since 1959; Keystone Paper Companywhich manufactures paper products including cardboard and newsprint; Ford Motor Companywhich manufactured cars here starting in 1916 before moving production overseas; First State Bank which has been open since 1865; Internet pioneer Sun Microsystems Incorporated (formerly DECInternational Inc.) until it merged with Oracle Corp.; Wittmer Manufacturing Co.,Inc., makers of Winthrop warehousing systems until 1986 when they moved their operations into Plano TX; among others... 1
Cary was founded in 1837 by Nathaniel Cary and his wife Anna. The town was named after Nathan Cary, an early settler and pioneer who helped found the village of Cary on the banks of the Des Plaines River. The first store in town was built on Main Street, and Rev. James Hays served as its first pastor. In 1851, the town moved to a new location at present-day 109th Street and Illinois Avenue. By 1860, Cary had a population of about 100 people. The opening of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway in 1871 increased trade and population in Cary,. When that railroad merged with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1883, most of what is now Illinois Avenue became part of Chicago. However, many residents continued to reside in Cary until the early 1990s when it closed down for lack of business support. Today only a few houses remain standing in downtown Carytown
