Carpenter’sville is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,697 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name “Carpenter’sville” comes from Jacob Carpenter who founded the town in 1853. The town was named for him because he constructed the first house there. The first settlers in Carpenter’sville were farmers and their families. By 1867, the population had increased to 11 people and a sawmill had been built. In 1870, the first schools were established in Carpenter’sville; they were called the Friends School and later renamed Carpentersville School District No. 1 (now Carpentersville-Rochester Hills School District). From 1870 to 1932, Carpenter’sville was a dry township with no water available until it became a city through annexation by Chicago in 1933. In 1907, Jethro Hargrave began construction of what would become one of Carpentersville’s most famous landmarks – his Swinging Bridge which links Carpenterstown with Smithtown across Lake Michigan. The bridge is now known as Hargrave Boulevard and has been used as an agricultural road since its creation . Carpentersville has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three hundred years and was first settled by Dutch immigrants in 1795. The name "Carpentersville" likely comes from the bark of the tree carpenter's oak which grows near the village. The first settler, Adam Greenough, built a log home in 1814 and the following year he married Sarah Parsons who also resided in Carpentersville. By 1830 there were six stores, one schoolhouse, two churches and twenty-one homes in Carpentersville. In 1831 Abraham Lincoln was elected President of America and soon after began his political career as a Representative from Illinois's 3rd congressional district. He won election to that seat in February 1832 but he resigned before taking office because he had failed to win re-election as an Independent candidate despite being endorsed by both parties. On March 4th (the date that Abraham Lincoln became President), Carpentersville residents voted 1-0-1 in favor of secession from the United States because they felt their state was under attack by federal troops occupying their land during the American Civil War when many others did not do so at this time due to fear of retribution or being outed as rebels. Aftermath: On April 12th 1861 Confederate forces attacked Union forces at Peoria Heights outside of Carbondale while General Ulysses S Grant was leading an army across central Illinois towards Springfield; this led to heavy losses for both sides with more than 300 killed and wounded on each side including General Grant himself who lost an arm amputee during battle.[1] When news reached General Grant about what had happened he ordered his army to withdraw towards Cairo[2] but instead it turned around and invaded southern Illinois again consisting of over 50 miles march than original plan[3].
