In 1957,ITT merged with Dow Chemical Company to become one of the largest U S industrial conglomerates. During World War II, many men from nearby Carbondale served in military service through the carbide works located there; these men are honored with an annual award given by Carbondale-based ArcelorMittal Industries Inc.—the world's largest steelmaker—in recognition of their services during hostilities worldwide. It has been said that "Carpenterstown may be small but its impact upon society cannot be understated." With its rich history dating back centuries, Carpenterstown has played an important role not just within its own community but also throughout Cook County over time and continues to do so today as one of Chicagoland's most vibrant communities
