However, during the mid-19th century American industry began to decline and many factories closed their doors in Carbondale; however, Carpenter’sville continued to grow because of its unique agricultural products which remained popular well into the 20th century. In 1924 Anthony Wayne developed Wayne Motorsports Park which became one of America’s largest open-air NASCAR races ever held when it started on October 3rd that year. Today Carpenter’sville remains an important manufacturing center with many businesses still located downtown including two banks (The National Bank & Trust Company and The Peoples National Bank), several restaurants/bars/cafés (including Caverna Italian Restaurant & Bar & Tavern), three libraries (The Carbondale Independent School District Library System – previously known as The Carbondale Public Library) as well as numerous smaller stores including four post offices (the last being First National Bank). Many local residents continue to live close by such as several schools within walking distance or less along Route 40A which runs through town providing access to many recreational opportunities such as swimming without havingto leave your house!
