The name of the town comes from its founder, Hiram Carpenter, who built a sawmill and gristmill on the banks of the Sangamon River in 1818. Carpentersville became an incorporated village in 1889. The first settler in what is now Carpentersville was Hiram Carpenter, who lived on a farm near present-day North Elston and founded Carpentersville in 1818 as a mill and sawmill community. In 1827, he built a store and tavern at present-day Elmira Road/Route 6 interchange. The town prospered from these enterprises until 1830 when currency reform caused a dramatic decrease in business revenues. A new sawmills were erected around this time but did not fare as well commercially as those earlier ventures; by 1840, only one remained operational functioning full time. By 1850, however, carpentry had become an important part of the local economy with over forty businesses active or open for trade within two blocks of each other along Elmira Road/Route 6 corridor; this success led to increased development including residential neighborhoods adjacent to both mills and commercial areas within walking distance of most businesses (Avery & Ness 1990). In 1889, Carpentersville became an incorporated village under the name "Carpentersville." This growth was helped by strong contributions by several individuals: banker Wirt Bates donated land for incorporation; trustee Samuel Morse contributed $1,000 towards construction costs; Solomon Andrus donated four horses and four wagons for use on Village streets; cashier Ebenezer Farnsworth contributed $5 per month towards Village expenses until his death in 1886. Organization also came from Captain John Gifford commanding Company K Illinois Volunteer Infantry during America's Civil War who brought twenty men to help build roads and erect fences that bordered Village boundaries (Farnsworth 1998). Today Cartwheel Drive runs through downtown Carpentersville serving as arterial road leading throughout Cook County directly to Springfield Missouri or Chicago IL without having to go any further than North Elston which sits just outside our borders!

In 1863, Carpentersville became one of twelve townships in Cook County and was named for Carpenter brothers, carpenters who had come to the area from New England in the early 1800s. The town experienced significant growth following World War II when many military families moved here from all over Illinois to work on rebuilding after the war. In 1951, Carpenterville became one of two townships in Cook County to be annexed by neighboring Barrington Hills; this change allowed Carpentersville to become an independent municipality with its own police and fire departments. The population has continued to grow since then as more people move into the community and businesses opened up. Today, Carpentersville is home to a variety of businesses including four schools (two public and two private), a library (the first open within city limits), and several churches including First Methodist Church which serves as the localicenter.
The first carpenters in Carpentersville were Abram H. and Isaac A. Bickman. The business was started by Abram H. in 1851, and it continued until 1865, when it became the business of Jacob Kappelman. In 1870, the business passed to Herman Weisbach, and then to Melchior Weisbach. In 1922, the business passed to Elmer Fischhoff, who continued until his death in 1952. The company was then purchased by Harry Jaffe in 1954.
