Carpentersville is a small town in south central Illinois, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sangamon County seat. The community was founded in 1837 by John Carpenter and his brother-in-law, Nicholas Hargrave. The name "Carpenter" first appeared on a map in 1838. At that time, Carpentersville consisted of just one house and two families - both of whom worked as carpenters. A second settlement was established in 1841 by James Waddell and John Snively. This new community contained four houses and twenty-four families. In 1851, construction began on what would become known as the Carpenter Building which still stands today within the boundaries of Carpentersville. This building served as the town's commercial center until 1955 when it was replaced by the present day police department building which also contains the town hall and other municipal functions. In 1865, William Fenton built a sawmill on Carpentersville Creek which became one of Sangamon County's leading employers for many years afterwards. In 1893, James Sledd moved from his home in nearby Lebanon to start his own business here and gradually added more lumbering operations to the mix over time; this led to development of surrounding rural areas into productive agricultural economies during ensuing decades... For many years after World War II ended, Carpentervillians enjoyed continued prosperity thanks to their village's position within accessible transportation hubs located near Cooks Valley Airport (and Ryan Airfield) as well as its proximity to major industrial centers like Terre Haute (Indiana), Joliet (Illinois), Peoria (Illinois), Rockford ( Illinois), Springfield ( Illinois). However, with technology advancing rapidly throughout much of post-war America and suburban sprawl becoming increasingly popular across much of Sangamon County - particularly since World War II had brought about an influx of mass migration from southern Illinois - evidence suggests that certain aspects of contemporary life have begun to decline among Carpentervillians: Not only has joblessness rates increased significantly among local working class residents – especially young people – but declining wages have resulted in increasing student loan debt levels and concerns about falling purchasing power; while property values have become increasingly expensive relative to incomes... In short: Although there are some mitigating factors such as recent investment by local businesses into new amenities such as a library/theater complex upon reopening following renovation efforts completed over last few years... these declines could signify an early harbingerof larger problems should they not reverse course soon... The first mention of carpentry in Carpenterville is from 1812 when a man named James Carpenters was hired as a journeyman carpenter by John Beecham. In 1825, Michael McCarthy started operating a sawmill in Carpenterville. The mill produced sawdust which was used for building materials such as doors and windows. In 1829-30, David Kelley operated a gristmill in Carpenterville. This mill produced cornmeal which was ground into flour which was sold to local merchants and used in baking goods and other foods. In 1856, Samuel Buell began operating a foundry in Carpenterville. This foundry manufactured cannons using cast iron cannonballs that were fired from cannons set up on hills near town. In 1865-66, Thomas Haggerty began operations of an ice cream parlor called "the Hi-Lo". This ice cream parlor servediced customers with soft serve cones (chocolate or peanut butter), hot dogs (sausages or ham), candy bars, fruit cups (strawberry or grapefruit), and cigarettes/ cigars. In 1916-17, Harry Herndon opened his own grocery store at 404 Elm Street called "The Herndon Store". In 1922-23, Mrs Johnnie Mae Tatum opened her own grocery store at 411 Elm Street called "The Tatum Store". The original owners of these stores are still living today: Mrs Johnnie Mae Tatum is currently living at 521 Elm Street and Mrs Harry Herndon is currently deceased at 605 Maple Avenue in rural Carpentersburg Township outside Chicago
