In 1865, Carpentersville was acquired by John Hays Chisholm and his family and changed its name to Chisholm-Hays City while continuing to trade as Carpenter's Valley Furniture Works. When Interstate 95 was built through central Illinois in 1956, Chisholm-Hays City lost its standing as an important transportation center and eventually fell into disrepair but has since been restored as an agricultural community with small businesses clustered around its main square where you can still find Carpenter's tools being used today
