Carpentersville, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name of the town comes from "Guns and Carpenters" which means "two trades coming together." The town was founded in 1848 by David Hockley and John Weems as a lumbering and carpentry center. In 1865, it became the first city in Cook County to have an organized police department. In 1886, two brothers named Isaac and Harry Vail started the Gurney Manufacturing Company which made firearms magazines. They were eventually bought out by Remington Arms company in 1903. From 1903 to 1957, Carpentersville was home to Remington Arms' Research & Development Center (R&D). R&D was responsible for developing many new products such as the AR-15 rifle and shotgun. During this time period alsoCarpentersville saw some of its mostsignificant events such as when Mayor Thomas Sowell addressed Congress about gun control legislation being passed that year; when President Eisenhower visited Carpentersville during his White House term; when Secretary of State Robert F Kennedy campaigned in nearby Skokie; and when Senator John F Kennedy visited Carpentersville during his presidential campaign. When Remington Arms merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1994, Carpentersville ceased to exist as an incorporated municipality but continued to be governed under their terms within Cook County until its dissolution on February 14th of that year pursuant to a plan announced by then-President Clinton following a meeting he had with representatives from both groups held at McCormick Place in Springfield, Illinois

In 1916, when Illinois joined the United States during World War I, Carpentersville became an important military base for aircraft production at Wright Field in Dayton Beach. After World War II ended, Carpenterstown became one of the most diversified communities in Cook County with a wide variety of businesses including pharmacies, beauty salons and food processing plants; however it lost some key industrial assets to suburban development during the late 20th century. Today Carpentersville remains a small town with close-knit relationships between its residents and their local businesses; it also retains its pioneer roots as an agricultural center that produces hops and other crops for beer brewing purposes

It has been part of the Chicago metropolitan area since its incorporation in 1847. The first settlers to Carpentersville were three brothers by the name of Haggerty who settled on a farm near the present day intersection of State and Douglas Streets in 1824. For many years, it was considered one of the most rural areas within Chicago. The village began as a two-room schoolhouse built on the site of today's Library Square in 1846. This building served as the primary educational center for local farmers and their children until 1865 when Carpentersville became an incorporated village under state law. In 1905, Carpentersville voted to annex from Maywood Township which had been formed about two miles west of town. That same year saw construction begin on what would become downtown Carpentersville – a brick courthouse, post office and bank that still stands today. In 1927, voters passed a referendum authorizing cityhood which they later granted on December 3rd that same year with a population of 751 residents
