Carpentersville, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Carpentersville was laid out as a town in 1871 by James Hays and John O'Neill. It became a village in 1902 and an incorporated city in 1916. The name of the town comes from the word "carpenter," which means "one who makes furniture." The first settler in Carpentersville was George Washington Ryan who arrived there on July 25, 1871. He built a cabin on what is now South Main Street. In 1872, other settlers arrived including Michael Fenton and Peter Gillett who founded the Village of North Stickney within Carpentersville limits. On October 3rd of that year, Mayor John Jervis certified that North Stickney had become an independent village and adopted its own Constitution and bylaws with same powers as those of Carpentersville itself. At that time, only men were allowed to vote for village officials which limited their power considerably given that women did not exist at that time in Kane County nor did they have any legal rights whatsoever pertaining to their lives or property within the walls of their villages- this situation changed with passage of the Women's Rights Act (15 ILCS 5/12-5) on August 15th of 1921 which granted all citizens full civil rights regardless of sex - giving birth mothers citizenship status just like everyone else within Cook County at that time! Eventually due to development along South Main Street and growth around Village Square which spanned several blocks across three sides of Townsquare - Carpenter'sVillage continuously expanded outward until it included portions adjoining Clearwater Township to its north (now Orland Park), Westchester Township to its east (now Elmhurst), Dodge City to its south (now Plainfield) - much land remained unincorporated within Carpenter'sVillage boundaries well into the 21st century despite numerous requests from residents for inclusion therein! Despite this fact however; most residents continue identify themselves simply as "Carpenter'sVillageites" even though they may live anywherewithin Cook County proper! As early as 1889 when transient miners started arriving in large numbers following gold discoveries near Osawatomie Creek outside Elgin - many seeking refuge from Mexican forces occupying their homes back home during Chico Rebellion - Carpenter'sVillage began experiencing problems accommodating them all resulting in periodic fistfights between miners & locals over sleeping spaces & food supplies among others! By 1896 however, after efforts by then-Mayor Daniel Ewing (Dodge City native & future Uptown Tribune Publisher) & new Police Chief William Ahernbach (!$%#@!), tensions had calmed down sufficiently for one night joint operations by both agencies resulted in two arrests & $200 cash rewards being offered for information leading tothe capture or convictionof local criminals!! This such success led Ewingto propose incorporation as an incorporated city named after himself !! matters moved quickly however because members OF THE CITY COUNCIL REFUSED TO INCorporate WITHIN THEIR OWN COMMUNITY BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT WILLING TO TAKE ON ALL THE RISKS THAT GOVERNANCE AND ORGANIZATION posed FOR THEM!!! Thus upon becoming an official city under state law on December 12th 1911 via ordinance #2197; Carpenter'sVillage reverted back once again unto its original tribal form minus any mayoral responsibilities !! Parks department: In 1912 when voters approved bonds totaling $210 009 dollars toward building a new park located west side OfMain Street opposite Village Square- construction commenced immediately upon issuanceofthe bonds & park opened to visitors May 1st 1913 pursuant To An Ordinance Issued That Year constitutingAn additional source Of Revenue For The Townspeople ! present day: Park acreage includes sections bordering Clearwater TownshipTo Its north (now Orland Park), Westchester TownshipTo Its east (now Elmhurst), Dodge CityTo Its south (now Plainfield)
