Gun chokes (or "gun jams") are a type of firearm stoppage caused by the obstruction of the breechblock or bolt carrier from moving forward. Gun chokes are most commonly encountered in revolvers, but can also occur with shotguns and pistols. The first known gun choke was created by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. The original gun choke consisted of a piece of metal that was fit into the breech block and secured to it by means of four screws. This choke prevented the firing chamber from filling up with powder and causing an unintentional discharge. A significant development in gun choking technology occurred in 1868 when French inventor Augustin-Jacques Conte developed the contrivance known as the "Conte Choke". This choke consisted of a tube that was inserted into the breech block, passed through one end to a fitting on the frame, and screwed onto it behind; this allowed cartridges to be fired without having their propellant gas escape and cause an unintentional discharge. In 1898, Hungarian inventor László Averbuch developed what is now called a "Conte Choke" handgun muzzleloader choke which prevents air pressure inside the firearm's barrel from reaching detonating charges within the cartridge case, thus preventing accidental fires. The first settler in Carpentersville was John Carpenter who arrived in 1814. The town was founded on December 29, 1836 by James Fenton and others as a result of the General Survey of Sangamon County. It became a local government on February 6, 1840 under the name of Village of Carpentersville. On November 15, 1852 it changed its name to Carpentersville after Major-General David Dixon and his division Cavalry brigade landed there from Springfield to take possession of what was then known as “the Black Hawk Country” east of present day Carbondale. In 1863 it had a post office with ZIP code 60634 and an agricultural market with A & P Fine groceries until it discontinued mail service in 1978. The first school which taught grades one through twelve was built in1850 by David Dixon himself and operated for one year before being replaced by a log schoolhouse which burned down on October 14th, 1850 In 1865 Judge JF Sears opened the first store in this community when he moved from Peoria to open his business here Also opening during 1865 were C&G Smith grocery stores (later renamed Sears), Wernick’s Hardware and Post Office #2 . By 1880 there were 10 businesses in this community with over $100,000 worth of merchandise sold each month . One hundred years later only 8 businesses remain with over $60K worth of sales each month while 1 post office still operates serving Carpentersville residents
