Carpenterville, Illinois is a small town located in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1871 by John Carpenter and his family. They built a log cabin on the edge of what is now Carpentersville Lake. The first store in the community was established by Wm. Aiken and Son in 1872. In 1879, John Carpenter married Anna Maynard and they began to build their own home. The Carpenter's were one of the early residents who actively participated in local politics and served as trustees for several school districts before dying out around 1920s when John's son became mayor of Carpentersville with statewide responsibility (John Carpenter had also been elected to this office). -Carpentersville has been occupied continuously since 1871 by John Carpenter's descendants; Anna Maynard's husband William Aiken ran the first store here -John Carpenter served as Mayor from 1920 until his death in 1928; he also taught at Carbondale High School -Anna Maynard died in 1928 and her husband left town posthumously In 1850, five men from Maryland arrived at Carpenterville Lake seeking passage to Nauvoo, Illinois on horseback through bad weather conditions. They named their new settlement after James Kappes, an officer with Company H (1st Missouri Infantry) then present at Peoria during that city’s siege of that year: Kappes Landing or Carpenterville (later renamed Park Ridge). By 1860 most all of McHenry County had been surveyed and organized into townships; only Carbondale remained unincorporated save for a few scattered farms hereabouts... James Kappes habitually visited these parts…When he discovered there were no settlers living near him who could accommodate him within his means He set out for Nauvoo on foot October 7th [1850], accompanied only by his dog! On reaching Nauvoo he found that Captn Weber’s company [of First Regiment] was quartered there without food or water but Captn Weber generously sent him two barrels of cornmeal which he shared with Kappes…. After spending some weeks searching among aberrant bushes & scrubby trees near old Fort Dearborn[Kapps Landing] he finally reached Safety about December 16th [1850]. In 1840, the first courthouse in Carpentersville was built, and by 1850, there were also several stores and businesses located in the town. By 1870, however, production at local quarries had dwindled so much that Carpentersville became an agricultural center with only 2 businesses operating out of its 5 original establishments. However, despite this decline in activity during the early part of this century; Carpentersville slowly but surely regained its former glory as a vibrant community with many interesting amenities and attractions available to its citizens. One such amenity that enjoyed significant popularity during this period was its public library which opened in 1904. The library quickly became one of the most popular destinations for locals and visitors alike due to its large size and unique design which featured intricate carved rails throughout its walls. Additionally, the library played an important role in giving citizens access to information they might not have otherwise been able to find or afford while also providing users with an opportunity to meet other interested individuals from around town. With all these features added onto what is today known as “the Carpenter’s Library Building”; it is no wonder that over time has come to be considered one ofCarpentersville’s most cherished assets- both physically and mentally speaking!
Carpentersville was founded by several families in the late 1800s. The first family to settle in the area was the Smiths, who arrived in 1847. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Sangamon River. The Smiths were followed by another family, the Rankins, in 1858. In 1861, a group of men from Illinois named John Hargrave came to Carpentersville and began to build a sawmill on the riverbank. The town got its name from these early settlers, who used Carpenter’s Trade Paper for their paper products. By 1870, Carpentersville had a population of about 60 people. In 1881, three brothers named John and Abram built a gristmill on High Street near present-day Weldon Road. This mill became one of Carpentersville’s most important businesses and produced flour, cottonseed oil, cheese, bacon and other goods until it closed in 1957.
