Carol Stream is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Carol Stream is one of the oldest towns in Cook County and has been around since 1834. The original settlers were French Canadians who arrived in 1763. The town was named after Carolyne de Rothschild, widow of Samuel de Rothschild. It was platted in 1834 by JF Leland and WG Dearborn under the name of "Carolyn." The first post office opened in 1835. The first store was built on Center Street in 1840 by Fenton Houlahan. A second store was built on Union Street in 1850 by Isaac Beasley and James Cafferty. A third store building burned down in 1853 but it was rebuilt and became known as the Leland Store. In 1860, a stagecoach stop called "Carolyn" was located at the intersection of Caroline and Elm Streets which served as the town's only business until 1886 when a railroad station called "Carolyn" open at Caroline and Elm Streets also served as the town's sole business until 1930 when it closed for good due to low passenger traffic; however, freight continued to be transported through Carol Stream until 1925 when an industrial plant replaced it making CarolStream once again a center of commerce with its only industry being manufacturing operations serving local customers (manufacturing stopped production at this plant by 1985). In1886 there were two schools: St Josephs School #1 which operated from April 12th-May 2nd and Sacred Heart School which operated from May 3rd-June 1st; both schools were part of what is now known as PreK–8 public school district #2A Holy Cross elementary school opened on October 15th, 1886 which together with St Joseph’s School #1 combined eventually formed what is now known as PreK–8 public school district #2B . On December 16th 1880 Mrs Anna Kapp founded “The Grosvenor” grocery shop next door to where “The Carolyne” grocery shop stood today; she later changed her name to “Mrs Kapp” because she did not want her husband John Kapp to be associated with his mother’s grocery store name (John had already taken over his father’s company) . On December 20th 1890 Mrs Anna Kapp donated land east of current Route 53 along Old Route 12 for use as a Methodist church graveyard . This land would become home to Holy Cross High School while other portions were used for houses that still stand today including Pemberton Road house off current Route 53 just south of New Lenox Rd; these areas are now part of Brookline Village development
