It was named for Caroline Smith of Hampshire County, England. The early residents were farmers who raised corn and beans. A post office called Stream was established in 1848 and the name was changed to Carol Stream in 1850. In 1870, the town of Carol Stream merged with nearby West Side to form a new city. The growth of Chicago led to a decline in manufacturing jobs across America during the 1970s and 1980s; however, CarolStream remained relatively unaffected by this trend until the 1990s when it lost its primary economic base due to NAFTA competition from Mexico City. Carol Stream is located at (41.865927,-87.728914). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of 2 square miles (5 km2).
