Carol Stream is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Carol Stream" is derived from English settlers' spelling of Karrlea (Karrela), meaning "paved stream." The first permanent settler in what would become Carol Stream was James Hickey in 1827. Hickey and his family built a cabin on the streambank and became the first people to live there permanently. By 1830, other families had also moved into the area and began to call it Carol Stream because of its many clear streams or ditches that flowed through it. In 1836, when Indiana Territory was created, portions of Illinois were included within it and Carol Stream became part of Carbondale township. In 1847, Carbondale Township merger with another township, Mayfield Township, to form Carbon County. On December 1, 1850, Carbon County was divided into two parts – one including Carbondale Township and the other including Carol Stream – and this made CarolStream an official incorporated place. During World War I (1914-18), after Illinois entered neutrality by becoming a United States protectorate under President Wilson's Executive Order 9982,"the town came alive with patriotism as soldiers arrived for duty", according to historian Beverly Sills in her book "Eager Beginnings: A History of Carbondale-Normal-Carrollton Community." Many businesses closed during war years as factories turned away workers due to wartime production quotas; however many local residents who could not find work reopened their businesses once hostilities ended. Carol Stream, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,505 at the 2000 census. The community was founded in 1836 by refugees from Kentucky and Tennessee who left their homes to find new homes. It became an incorporated town on November 2, 1886. In 1893 it had a post office with ZIP code 61822 and its first mayor was John H. Ridgely. In 1975 it merged with Angelina Heights to form Carol Stream-Angelina Heights Township of McLean County.
Carol Stream is an incorporated town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,512 at the 2010 census. Carol Stream was founded in 1847 by General David Dixon and his wife Sarah Stephenson as a small community on the south side of Chicago. Dixon's brother-in-law, Alonzo Dearborn, donated land for the town site. The first store opened in 1850. In 1865, the town began receiving mail from Burlington, Iowa; this led to its name change to Burlington in honor of its new postal source. The townsfolk built their first schoolhouse in 1867 and a gristmill followed in 1870. A post office was established at Carol Stream in 1872; it served until 1955. The first church was erected in 1874 and dedicated by Reverend Wm Jernigan; it remained operating until 1978 when it was replaced by a state-operated facility. In 1901, construction began on the Illinois Central Railroad's Chicago–Stroudsburg Railway line through Carol Stream; this led to increased freight traffic and development of the community center and other businesses along the rail corridor. The railroad closed down completely in 1971 but left behind some impressive industrial heritage that has been preserved over time including a locomotive shop and two blast furnaces used for making steel products during World War II. The townsite was placed under federal control following Urbandale v.Normal (1948), which declared that all property within municipal boundaries must be dedicated to public use without any private ownership or use allowed without consent from the governing body (township). As part of this effort, development restrictions were put into place prohibiting settler growth beyond what had been authorized by township trustees; these limitations were lifted following purchase of additional land adjacent to townline by Township residents after Urbandale v Normal specifically exempted township holdings from such regulations as long as they adhered to certain zoning concepts guidelines set forth therein - these guidelines would later be amended with greater flexibility following suburbanization of Cook County throughout much of the 1970s/1980s officially bringing about "the era of villagehood" within Cook County - seeVillage Green: A New Hope?
