Carol Stream is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1837 by Irish immigrants. The name of the town came from the stream that ran through it. The stream's name has been changed many times, but it is still known as "Carol Stream." The first settlers in Carol Stream were two brothers, Michael and Patrick McCarthy. They started out planting corn and potatoes on their farmstead and soon realized that they needed to find more land to grow crops. In 1838, they bought 3 acres (1 km2) of land from John Stephenson for $27 per acre. This purchase marked the beginning of Carol Stream's growth as a community. The next year saw another important milestone for Carol Stream when Michael McCarthy died suddenly at the age of 31 years old while working on his farmstead. John Stephenson took over his farm and continued to grow crops until he passed away in 1840 at the age of 82 years old. This left Michael McCarthy's widowed mother with 4 acres (16 hectares) of land to sell and start anew on her ownfarmstead. She named her new home "CarolStream" after her son's birthplace in Ireland. This new community quickly grew due to its proximity to other towns and villages in Kane County as well as its natural resources such as coal mines, forests, waterfalls and lakes nearby. By 1847, CarollStream had a population of 50 people living on 4 farms totaling 158 acres (6 km2). In 1851, Caroline Sherman moved into Carol Stream with her husband Edward Lee from New York City following the American Civil War which led to an influx of refugees into Illinois during that time period including many Catholics escaping religious persecution back home in Ireland. Many residents here founded what became known as the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad company which transported goods between Chicago and various points around northern Illinois including Carbondale, Normalville and Carol Streams along its route today known officially as Union Pacific Railroad Company Line #3/4 southbound between Carbondale Junction & Peoria Junction
