Carol Stream is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to one of the largest concentrations of Italian Americans in the United States. The population was 106,818 at the 2010 census. The town site was first settled in 1827 by John Roemer and others from what is now Westchester County, New York. In 1829, General David Dixon founded a post office here with the name "New York." After Illinois became an American state in 1837, New York continued to be its official name until January 1, 1800 when Illinois became a U.S. state as well. In 1846–47 James Kapp organized a group of farmers that donated land for the village of Carol Stream on which the town now stands. A year later he named it after his wife Caroline Kapp (née Hecker). The community grew rapidly and by 1860 had a population of 350 residents. By 1870 it had climbed to 2,500 people and by 1880 it reached 5,000 residents. Carol Stream's growth came about because its location near Chicago made it convenient for businesses seeking access to both markets and workers who were needed during America's industrial Revolution. Although many German immigrants also arrived in early years of this period due to business opportunities available in Chicago (and other cities), Carol Stream remained overwhelmingly Italian American until prohibition caused most Italians to move out or emigrate during Prohibition era (1912-1933) when immigration laws were changed so that only family members could come into the country illegally; officially becoming an all-white community once they re-entered legally through various legal processes after 1933 began permitting African Americans to own land within limits set forth hereinabove called "integration". During Prohibition many people living in Chicago locales such as Keokuk and Maywood lost their jobs as result of prohibition but some found work here including men like Tony Rezende who ran two breweries before moving on to establish several large grocery stores throughout suburban Cook County beginning around 1920s despite law enforcement efforts against bootlegging operations being mounted nightly throughout those years; one such night resulting in Rezende’s arrest outside his store just before closing time; subsequent convictions resulted him serving three years probation followed by 15 months imprisonment following his release from prison on December 12, 1923 having been incarcerated for vending game tickets without paying taxes which totaled $521 ($ today) according to records held at Kane County Circuit Court since 1924 . The first documented reference to Carol Stream was made in 1812 when John Smith listed it as one of his "cities and villages" on the north side of the Chicago River. At that time, all of present-day Cook County was within Ohio Territory and not Illinois. In 1824, following the Mexican–American War, General Josiah Wright moved his army from Kankakee to what is now Carol Stream in order to encamp near Joliet Township for winter purposes. This location became known as Wright's Campground due to its association with General Wright and his forces during this time period. In 1827, The Methodist Episcopal Church established a home here which served as their main worship ground until they built their own church in downtown Chicago in 1881. In 1840, an addition was made to the original Carol Stream Post Office building which housed a store and two homes (now used as apartments). The property later became known as Loop Field; it currently houses Park West Apartments on one end and All Souls Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on the other end ofLoop Field Drive. The first school in what is now CarolStream was built by Friends Meeting House in 1850 using materials provided by local farmers who were impacted bythe American Civil War. It continued operations until 1865 when it merged into nearby Yeslerowna School District #1 which continues operation today.. Carol Stream has been visited by both President George Washington (1787-1797) and President Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865) while delivering speeches or taking public addresses from Mount Rushmore National Monument located just east of town along Interstate 90 between Greenfield Village Road and I-90 Exit 6B southbound - about 15 minutes away from town center on Route 606 northbound
