Carroll Stream is a small town in Illinois, located on the Fox River. It was founded in 1836 by John Stephenson and his wife, Mary. The community is named after one of its founders, James Carroll. Carol Stream is a township in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1839 by Germans and Poles who had come overland from Prussia. In 1856, it became a village when all of the surrounding townships were merged into Cook County. The name "Carol Stream" derived from the stream that passed through the town. In 1920, Carol Stream was anglicized to its current name of Carol City after statuary by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens was placed in the town square. At that time, most people in Carol Stream identified themselves as Irish Americans or Germans. After World War II ended and many German Americans moved out of Carol Stream or left for other places because of discrimination, some Italians started moving into the town as well and began calling themselves "Irons". The community has undergone many changes since then including becoming an agricultural center with large corn cribs on either side of Main Street where farmers grow their crops year round; a manufacturing district around Interstate 91; and now being home to large numbers of professionals such as law enforcement officers and firefighters who work in nearby downtown Chicago.

The town was founded by John Gregg and others in 1847 as a small farming community on a stream near what is now Lombard Street. By 1875, Carol Stream had developed into a small town with a post office and two hotels. In 1907, the first electric streetcar line arrived in Carol Stream; it served as the town's main artery until 1973 when a new road opened that replaced it. In 1966, Carol Stream became home to one of America's first high school basketball teams when North Suburban High School moved from Glenview to become Carol Stream High School. North Suburban closed in 2002 after many years of poor academic results; however, its alumni continue to play football and basketball for various programs at other schools in Cook County. Since 1975, annual events have included carnival games ( traditionally held during Mardi Gras), country music concerts by local artists (usually headlined by country singer Willie Nelson or George Jones), and processions through downtown streets called "CarolStream Processions." On special occasions such as Memorial Day or Christmas Eve, villagers dress up like historical figures from early America to parade through theirtown streets dressed head-to-toe in costumes representing different aspects of early American history including pioneers such as Captain James Krieger or General David Dixon
