The name "Carol Stream" was given to it by General John Pershing on November 11, 1916 when he visited the town during World War I. The stream that runs through the town is also named after Pershing. The first post office in Carol Stream was established on March 14, 1852. The present post office building was built in 1925 and is used as a library. The Carol Stream School District serves school students living in the town and parts of Bloomington-Normal. It has a total enrollment of over 21,000 students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The history of CarolStream begins with pioneers who began to arrive here in 1851. They were farmers and their families who came to build homes and start businesses around what would later be known as Carpenters Road (now US 24). By 1870, most of this area had been developed into small towns with several thousand residents each. One of these earlyStartups was Carpenters Paper Mill which processed paper products such as books, magazines and letterhead for local businesses throughout Northwestern Illinois until it closed its doors in 1936 due to competition from then new electronic media companies like CBS Radio Networks Incorporated (CBS) and NBCUniversal Corporation (NBC). A few years later things started happening that would change not only CarolStream but many other small towns across Northwestern Illinois including: Carbondale; Decatur; Hinsdale; Marion; Peoria; Rockford; Springfield - all because of railroad construction projects! On April 12th 1863 Union soldiers arrived at Carbondale Station during the Civil War which changed everything for those living hereabouts! For about 4 years prior to that there had been no permanent residents or businesses within miles radius of where we now sit! Just like today's business owners within our boundaries take care of their customers - so too did these early railroad builders! With his company moving equipment into place along Central Avenue just east of Main Street some time after 1860 – Northern Pacific Railroad Co’s foreman George Stephenson put forth great effort helping lay track near Carbondale allowing goods & passengers alike passage between Chicago & Northwestern Indiana daily (!), soon enough hordes upon hordes started flowing thru these freshly laid tracks bringing with them social customs & habits peculiar to our people back then!! All this activity took place while families cooked their meals over an open fire or worked hard inside one or more sawmills making logs ready for export down South… Today’s Businesses Started Here In 1865 When A Bridge Was Built At This Location Connecting Two Rivers To Serve Our Townspeople Which Led To More Population Growth Over Time Duh!!!”
The Carol Stream area that now includes the City of Bloomington and parts of Illinois was first settled in the mid-19th century by people from Connecticut. At that time, the region was mostly farmland, with a few small communities situated along streams. The first community to be founded in this area was Carbondale, which began developing in 1857. By 1860, there were already over 100 residents living in Carbondale and its surrounding villages. In 1865, Carbondale became the capital of Illinois after it was chosen as the state's largest city.during this time period, many businesses and institutions were built in Carbondale including United States Steel Corporation (USSC), Northwestern University (now Northwestern Illinois University), and Illinois State Normal School (ISN). In 1972, Carbondale voters passed a referendum authorizing the annexation of part of neighboring Bloomington into the city limits. This move made Carbondale one of the most populous cities in Illinois. During this time period, many new businesses were established within what is now Bloomington such as Jamba Juice Company and Macy's Companies Incorporated. Today, carbondalers continue to make an impact on both local economy and global commerce through their entrepreneurship and coffee drinking habits
